When I was a kid on the beach in Orange County, if someone ask me to move to the middle of nowhere I would have said no way. But after living in So. Louisiana for 10 years and moving back.... crowds and traffic suck!
I think you have the right idea. MPollard's beach picture (right in my backyard) is nice, but fly in one afternoon and try to drive there! You'll be thinking, maybe Tiptronic isn't such a bad idea after all... hell, a limo sounds good!
Only problem is there is not much work out there... no coincidence you're retired! The internet has almost made it possible though... I officially work at home.
