My key broke last week in a similar fashion, tossing the key in the rain at night was my downfall. The next morning I went out and collected all the pieces including the chip and put it all back together like a puzzle. Works like a champ! Before I reassembled it, went to my dealership and found out that the key was not covered in the warranty and would have cost a bunch to replace and re-program. This motivated me in my quest to fix it myself. Good luck!

This is one reason I always negotiate a spare key when I buy the car. It costs the dealer very little and they always throw it in to close the deal. If I remember correctly they said the key was $200!

Previous info on this site indicates that a new key with programming for your car is about $500. Perhaps dealer cost is about $200.

Another current post says that the key is redesigned for 2008 models, with recessed buttons to eliminate accidental actuations. We know that the key disassembles into individual buttons, housings, circuit board, etc. Wouldn't it have been nice to make the redesign such that those components involved could have been retrofitted to our "old" keys and--now I'm really dreaming-- to provide those parts as sort of a recall. Maybe they did and I haven't been notified yet. Maybe Porsche will race the Cayman.

Note to self: Do not throw Cayman key out of third story window!

Sorry you broke your key but didn't you get two keys with your car?? I've always gotten two keys with my cars and I didn't have to negotiate. I thought it was standard practice for a dealership to give you two keys. Maybe I've just been lucky.

See the FAQ http://www.caymanclub.net/faq.php?faq=cayman#faq_caygen key part numbers and some estimates on cost are there, at least for 06 keys. They key comes in two parts and must be programmed. I think you only get six keys and that's it (not sure about that).

i called my service tech today and explained what happened with my key, he told me that they would only replace the whole key for around $350, my relaitionship with him goes back to my 996 days..... he was nice enough to tell me that another customer just came in and had to replace his key and that the back portion of that key is like new so he told me to come on down and pick it up......... thats why you should always be nice to everybody..........

Anyone know what a replacement key costs $350 to $500?!

Is it "just cuz Porsche can get away with it", or is there a more valid reason? Just seems insanely expensive...
