winter wheel /tire set up

Ordered my Caymanin Dec, seal gray, preferred +, and chrono forApril delivery. This is my 1st real Porsche (had a 914) I live in rural South Dakota ( 1 stop light and 5 females of child bearing age in the county) and will drive this car a lot. Past autos, Vette, SLK, TT .(all had over 150k miles within 3 years)Lessons learned, fiberglass does strange things at high speeds and -30 below, all convertibles leak cold air, 4 wheel drive works best with winter tires and light weight wheels with low profile tires disintegrate even at moderate speeds at -40 below. Other autos, S10, Sub, Taurus, all E85 cars. I canbuy E85 in bulk for $1.50 per gallon which I use in theseautos I drive one of these when the weather is really bad ( 6 inches of snow or more) or I need to haul something or go hunting. Other wise it will be the Cayman.

I need your advice on a winter tire/wheel combination that is some what bullet proof, it is 250 miles to the nearest Porsche Dealership. I would like to use 235's all around as the wider rear tires cause handling issues on rutted gravel roads,I can also rotate them for longer tread life. Any ideas?

Any Ideas?

I think the Porsche website or the Tequipment catalog lists the Porsche preferred winter wheel-tire combos for the Cayman, seems like someone posted them a few months back too.

It seems the consensus that the Cayman S brakes, same as the 987S brakes, require 18' rims for clearance. Therefore we're prevented from using a 17' winter/snow solution.

After considerable surfing, the only tires I've found in stock Cayman S 18' sizes--235/40 front, 265/40 rear-- are Continental TS 810S, and Dunlop M3. You can surf on these on Tire Rack and see what their data shows on them.

Porsche's Cayman S manual specifies winter/snow tires in 235/40 front and 255/40 rear sizes (both 18'). The 255 versus 265 variance is, I believe, due to the need to accomodate chains on the rear wheels. If you're not using chains, you can use 265 rears, IMHO.

For a 235/40 front, 255/40 rear set, again the only ones I've found are Dunlop M3 and Continental TS -810S.

If Tire Rack does not list a size, it's not necessarily because the manufacturer does not make them; it can also be because Tire Rack does not have them in stock.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Before you call, don't forget that if you click on the Tire Rack banner ad here, and then place your order over the web, Tire Rack donates a small sum to the site as a referral fee.
