Those of you who came along on either of the first two Rock'n'Croc rallies last year know that they featured some of the best driving roads in the world. Consider those two events a warm up for
the mother of all Rock'n'Crocs, the 3rd Cayman Club Rock'n'Croc Rally (RNC3), to be held Friday thru Sunday May 16-18, 2008. This is your invitation to join us for this great opportunity to exercise your Cayman!
For those of you who missed the first two Rock'n'Croc events, go to
this thread and
this one or look at the article in the 9/07 issue of
Panorama to get an idea of what this is all about. This time our route will take us on the superb roads of the Blue Ridge through Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, including the infamous "Dragon".
We'll be attacking a total of
15 - count 'em - 15 intense mountain driving runs over 2+ days. These are some of the best twisties up there, sequenced to maximize the fun (avoiding traffic, fatigue, tickets, etc.). We'll eat and stay at some nice spots, visit a waterfall or two, and maybe even have one or two Cayman Club sponsors show up with some special deals for us.
This event will be a little different from the previous two RNC's. For one thing, we're limiting it to just Caymans. There'll also be a registration deadline: April 15. And the fee for the event will be $85 per person.
(A word to the wise here. If you're thinking of bringing a passenger, be sure they have a "hearty constitution". These are very twisty routes that, when taken at speed, can be nausea-inducing for those in the passenger seat. That being said, for this event we'll have a special option to accommodate significant others who don't want to spend the whole weekend in the passenger seat - they can spend a day in the resort/shopping town of Highlands, NC while the rest of us are zipping through the twisties.)
Our itinerary will have us start on Friday morning at
the Laurel Mountain Inn - a resort motel near Table Rock
SC, head up the Pickens Hwy and then west to Highlands. From here we dive into Georgia: first Warwoman Road, then dash around Lake Burton, run up Blood Mountain, brave Georgia's "Baby Dragon", and head up Route 60 back into NC. After a run along the Cherohala Skyway, we'll stop for the night at
the Blue Waters Mountain Lodge near Robbinsville NC.
Saturday we'll make our customary early start to take on the Dragon. We'll then traverse the Foothills Parkway to Little River Road, then south on 441 through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Next we'll head through Maggie Valley, with a jog onto Balsam Mountain Road back into the Park for a few twisties up to a great view. From there it's on to RNC favorite Candler Mountain Road, up to
the Pisgah Inn, North Carolina for a scenic lunch beside the Blue Ridge Parkway. After lunch we'll meander along the Parkway a little, then make a stop at Looking Glass Falls before heading to
the Mountain Inn & Suites | Flat Rock, NC for the night.
Sunday morning we can have a leisurely breakfast before one last run: the exceptional Holbert Cove Road, which ends at I-26 in Saluda NC. From there you should have a straight shot for your ride back home.
As on previous Rock'n'Crocs, everyone will be responsible for making their own lodging reservations, paying for their own meals, etc. So for Thursday night, May 15 it's
the Laurel Mountain Inn - a resort motel (unless you're doing the "leave your passenger in Highlands" option, in which case you'll have to choose accommodations in Highlands, NC). For Friday night, May 16 get a reservation at
the Blue Waters Mountain Lodge, and for Saturday night, May 17 get one at
the Mountain Inn & Suites | Flat Rock, NC.
If you're planning on joining us for Rock'n'Croc 3, please PM me with your name, e-mail address, cell phone number, and whether you'll have a passenger with you. I'll then send you all the details about how to register for the event. Remember, registration closes April 15. It should be another great time!
