Because of all the talk of our 'slow' Cayman, I'd like to prove a point by listing all the cars that are faster in 1/4 mile than Cayman S. After the list complete, I'll bet only half would beat it on a road course. And then consider price after that... For the money,a Z06 is probably best, but we've had that conversation to death. And yeah, I would rather have a new Enzo over the Cayman, but it's hard enough to pay for 1 Cayman, much less 13 of them!
I agree for the money the Corvette is probably the best deal, but as I have said before in other threads on this board, I live in a GM town and although 'a dime a dozen' may be an overstatement, there are plenty of corvettes because of the executive discount. There is simply nothing unique about the Corvette. Corvette aside, I do not think there is a better bang for the buck than the Cayman. From what I have read, it is simply an awesome performing car for the money. I have had 986's and unless I could afford the 987S, which I cannot, I think this is the best deal in town. Finally, none of the car mags seem to disagree.
copied this from other thread:
New V8 M3 probably, but not so sure about current E46 model. Would be close. Again, no contest in handling based on my comparison of my M3 versus my test drives of 987S. Boxster crushes the M3 in terms of fun, handling, and feel. Also it feels just as fast and urgent and sounds a lot better. Granted I do have a convertible which certainly has an impact versus the coupe. It was wierd. I love the M3 and have a ball through the twisty hilly roads in Austin and surroundings, but my M3 felt like an SUV after driving the new Boxster S.
The M3 was one of my 'benchmark' cars for the Cayman to compete against. The best posted times I have seen for the M3 are the following.....
Car & Driver 4.5 13.1@107
Road & Track 4.7 13.3 @106.8
.......but every time I drove one they didn't quite feel that fast.......and most drivers could only get high 13s out of them, so who knows what the real street times are. Depends a lot on the driver.
So it looks to me like the Cayman is right around the same mark which is where I wanted it to be.
As far as other competition goes? Well my current Porsche is a mint 928 GT that is 'supposed' to be a mid to high 13 second car if driven correctly. I have come up against all types of Japanese pocket rockets and have pretty much wasted them all......and some not by little margins either. Not that they all have been slow, but I just don't see how some magzines get some of the numbers they get out of them. WRX sti, Mitsu Evos, 350Zs, and lots of others are no problems for the 928. They usually are equal from 0-60 or around that area, but quickly run out of steam after that.....at least in stock form.If the Cayman is a true 4.8/13.3 car, it shouldn't have trouble with a whole lot out there.
Some of the cars Ikeep an eye on are the new Chrysler SRT8 versions......some of those things are pretty damn fast in a straight line......
It would be an interesting dual between the Cayman S, Elise, and S2000. I would by that video if Best Motoring would put it out. Don't flame the S2000, it typically does very well on the track but it is not a drag racer nor is the Elise.
Or maybe Steve Sebasto's '69 Z28 clone with the 427 in it.
C'mon guys. Don't talk 1/4 mile times, that ain't what it's about.

Good point. Clearly, this car cannot be called slow by any measurement. It is a quick fast car. It isn't new Z06 fast, but it will pull and zoom. I read an article about the 987S where the writer said he had a moment in the new Boxster when he realized that for the first time he couldn't avoid the conclusion that the Boxster S is now an truly fast car.
Perhaps we should debate why we're individually attracted to the Cayman? For many, it seems that straight-line speed is the key issue, for others it's lap times, still others styling. For me, it's the expected ability of a mid-engine car to excell inhanling whilecornering. The only thing we can be sure of is that it's not purchase price.
I'm in it for the full package......name, style, handling, braking, steering, speed, etc, etc, etc.
The only reason I would focus on the 0-60, 0-100, or 1/4 mile in this instanceis the fact that I didn't want to purchase a $70K Porsche that would get blown away by a 6 year old BMW M3 orevenmatched by a Boxster...... in a straight line at least. Porsche intended the car to slot between the Boxster and 911 in performance and priced it there also. So why wouldn't I expect better performance numbers from it? I think Porsche did a fine job after looking at the first reviews.
