I'm new here, and I'm having a great time on this forum soaking up everything about the Cayman. Thanks for all the articulate input. I'm brand-new to Porsche; just fell in love with the car after one drive.
Random musings. The Cayman S will be a big step up for me. I haven't yet ordered, but it's interesting; the longer I look at the options list, the shorter it gets. My dealer has an inbound Cayman S in Arctic Silver/Black with a sport shifter and a rear wiper and that's it. $2,025 in options. It looks exactly like the fold-out in the Cayman brochure. I think I may do it. It'll be a great car.
I'm buying it for the drive. It's the first car I've ever driven that was actually thrilling to drive. (I've never driven any other Porsche.) As for that amazing options list, heck, I don't listen to music when driving, I've adjusted my own rear-view mirror for 40 years, I've adjusted my own air conditioning for 30 years, the stock wheels look great, they're easy to clean, and Walter Rohr says they're excellent, the halogen lights can bore holes in the night, and I don't expect to track my car, although I may try it. Oh, and nice, fold-up, $3 paper maps have gotten me everywhere I've ever driven. Besides, they give me something to tuck into those nice, leather-topped door bins.
It's just such a great car to get in and drive. Its basic format is superlative. Porsche nailed it. It looks great, it feels great, it drives like nothing on the planet, it's classy, it's great to touch. Plus you can add stuff if you want it and can afford more.
If I order a car, I'll add a sport wheel (a bit more clearance for my long legs) and maybe, possibly power seats, because my wife -- who will also drive the car -- is much shorter than I. But really, how hard is it to shove the seat back a few inches?
(None of this is to take anything away from all the cool options I've seen on your cars. All are great, each in a slightly different way.) Anyway, I love this car, and I'm looking forward to owning one.
That could of been me... STOP reading this forum NOW and just go buy your car already. OR read a whole bunch more Cayman Club and learn why you really want all that stuff and then end up spending all your hard earned money. <br
So "Just say no" to more options - and beware of... "the Dark Side."

I was lured to the darkside, ordered my cayman with most of the bells and whistles. Heck i am even getting them to install the radar lidar scrambler for me too. This will be likely my only opportunity to buy a car of this stature and as much as I have read about avoiding the options or you will price point yourself into the 911 realm, I prefer the look of the Cayman, I am not a race car driver and would probably never appreciate the finer technical benefits of the 911.

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Sport Chrono and Chrono Plus
This optional package is a valuable addition for trackday use. Available in conjunction with the CDR-24 CD radio, it includes a swivel-mounted analog and digital timer unit which is centrally located on the dashboard. All functions are easily accessible via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analog dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. A second digital display runs in parallel in the instrument cluster. Click this Link to visit the FAQ entry for Sport Chrono.
Escort Radar
At ESCORT, we're continually improving our line of radar and laser detectors with the best technology. Our latest invention, the GPS-powered PASSPORT 9500ix, is no exception. It provides the best long-range protection against every known radar and laser gun in use in North America, but also incorporates GPS accuracy to silence each and every false alert. It is by far the most intelligent, fully automatic radar and laser detector ever designed. You drive. It learns. End of story. http://www.escortradar.com
The options list got me pretty good too. Funny thing is that I got my wife on board with buying the Porsche with the argument that I could have that and a practical winter car for only slightly more than the RS4. It made so much sense...
...until the options list put my final Cayman S tally right up there with the RS4.
Doh! So much for that argument, but by then it was too late!
And Booster, since my Cayman is costing about as much as a 911 (and far moe than a slightly used one) I did test them both and I'm not so sure the regular 911 has 'finer' technical benefits on the whole. What it does have is a little more grunt (which is certainly a benefit), 2 half seats (of questionable value in a pure fun car), and the equivalent of a very large man sitting on the rear bumper (which is certainly a coarser technical drawback).
Congratulations and I'm sorry about the wait. I know EXACTLY what you're going through. I'm down to about 55 days, which might as well be an eternity.
