Boxster/Cayman series First Quarter Sales 3,248

<h5><span class="mainarttxt"><span class="t2">Record March for U.S. Porsche Sales

</h5>
<div class="ar">ATLANTA, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States and Canada, today announced its best-ever March sales in the United States. The company sold a total of 3,185 Porsches, an increase of 14 percent compared to March of 2005. Of this total 1,127 are Porsche 911s, the most ever sold in one month in the United States in the model's history. Year-to-date sales are up 26 percent to a total of 9,117 units compared to 7,219 sold in the first three months of last year.

PCNA has marked record sales in each of the three months of 2006. This remarkable performance was mainly due to sharp increases in sports car sales. The Boxster/Cayman series first-quarter sales of 3,248 units were 85 percent ahead of the same period last year, while the 911 series total of 2,839 units was 23 percent greater than the three-month total in 2005. Cayenne sales in March were up 2 percent compared to the same period of 2005, bringing the first-quarter total of 2,997 units close to last year's three-month volume of 3,093.

<pre> Sports Cars Help Kick Start Sales Momentum

ATLANTA, April 3 /CNW/ -- Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA),
importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United
States and Canada, today announced March sales in Canada. The company sold a
total of 178 Porsches, on par with sales of 182 units in March 2005, and
nearly twice the volume of last month's sales of 97 vehicles. Year-to-date
sales of 380 units are down 6 percent compared to the first three months of
2005.
While there is still a reduction in the overall numbers, demand for
Porsche sports cars has picked up speed. Boxster/Cayman series sales of 58
units marked a 21 percent increase over the same period last year. Total sales
of the 911 series of 72 units were up 9 units from March of last year, while
total Cayenne sales of 47 units were 23 units less than in March of 2005.
In addition, dealers sold 26 Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned
vehicles, compared to 23 for the same period last year.

We should look up the break-out between Boxster and Cayman and see how that fell out, in Canada it seems like the Cayman hurt Boxster and base 911sales but overall numbers were up.

^^Yep. I wonder if the Panarama can top these sales in the first quarter (compared to 987 series)

Ah I think I've got it based on some math

3248 total Boxsters and Caymans in Jan, Feb, March
1053 of those were Boxsters meaning
2195 were Caymans
1561 Caymans were sold in Jan and Feb leaving
634 Caymans sold in March

So sales look like this so far:

Jan 2005 - 1023 Caymans sold
Feb 2005 - 538 Caymans sold
March 2005 - 634 Cayman sold

That comparesfavoraby to the best months for the Boxster Cayenne and 911 in 2006
Boxster - 302 highest total in a month in 2006
911 (Carrera S Cab) - 370 highest total of any 911 model in a month in 2006
Cayenne (S model) - 879 highest total of any Cayenne model in a month in 2006

Not only did the Cayman S sell well its first intro month, but its monthly sales have exceeded all other models except for the Cayenne S in subsequent months.

Sales increased from 19.21 Caymans per day in February to 20.45 Caymans per day in March!

Outstanding!

Here is something else interesting that I noted from Jan-Feb sales that I will have to see if it holds up in March as well.

969 converible 911's sold vs. 737 coupes sold out of 1706 total 997's sold. Convertible is most popular!

692 convertible 987s sold vs. 1561 coupes sold out of 2253 total 987's sold in Jan-Feb 2006. Coupe is most popular! We know if the numbers above are accurate that Boxsters made up a little ground in March but still it is 1053 convertible vs. 2195 coupes in the 987 platform.

This leads to the conclusion that 997's (*911's*) are for playboys (mostly convertibles) while the 987 is mostly for drivers (mostly coupes)....

Hmmm that should stir up a hornets nest on some other Porsche enthusiast sites...

K-man, good point, and exactly what my sales guy told me at the roll-out--he said something very much to the effect of, 'the Cayman is a full on driver's car, the Carerra is for those who want luxury.' I asked him what he thought would happen to sales, and he said P is planning on making more 911 convertables and has reserved a lot of the boxster capacity for Caymans. Seems like P knew what to expect....at least so far.

<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Honestly, I think that it’s still too early to find anything conclusive based on the data provided&hellip;if your point is that the Cayman is a sales success.(Certainly I’m not saying that it is not&hellip;nor doIwish it notto be.)</div>

<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">If you are to compare sales velocity, you would need to compare the first 3 introductory months of Boxster and Cayenne&hellip;(mainly because those are new models to the Porsche line and do not have cult followings, like the 911.)</div>
<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"></div>
<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Without a doubt however, the sales data appear to indicate that the Cayman is cannibalizing the Boxster sales at this time.It is misleading to compare Boxster/Cayman totals to last year’s sales&hellip;guess the only point is that the Cayman is POTENTIALLY tapping into a market that was previously underserved by Porsche.</div>

I seem to recall that Porsche planed on 4000 units being sold in the US during the first 12 months. Seems right on target.

Actually I think Porsche has known this for a while.......the 996 C4S Convertible (mostheaviest and expensive) of the normally aspirated 996 line......was the best seller of the 996 line for its last year
