Cayman Club Jim Ellis Porsche 997.2 and RS Spyder Event - PICS!

Last night - October 1st - was the Spy the Spyder event at Jim Ellis Porsche which was attended by several members who had come into Atlanta early for Croctoberfest or who lived in the area.

First, I want to say that at Croctoberfest I am going to get pulled in several different directions and I saw it happen last night at Jim Ellis, one moment I'm starting a conversation with JRW from Cincy, the next David Stone is pulling me away for a beer and regailing stories of past racing episodes. I want to talk to as many of you as possible at Croctoberfest so please don't be shy and please bear with me as I get tugged in different directions. I always feel like I don't get to spend enough time with any one person at events like this, but I am trying to do my best! Ok on with the show...

In2Esses met us over at the hotel and we followed him to Jim Ellis where our cars were valet parked for the evening's events. All of the dealership personnel were there in force and each of them that I met were friendly and helpful. Our daughter had accidentally grabbed the iron in our room about an hour before and her hand was still hurting so she was crying off and on. Several of the staff expressed their concerns, brought us ice and helped to comfort her, we are very thankful for that!

The turn-out seemed pretty good and the food was top notch, having come from a Brazilian restaurant called Chimas (we are thinking of going there for a late lunch on Sunday or possibly dinner depending on time). The service bay was converted into a place to eat, there was live music at one end of the showroom and a bar at the other. Out front was parked the #7 RS Spyder which is making the rounds of various dealers and landed at Jim Ellis for the race weekend. Here's Kenny wanting to go for a ride:

The 997.2 was also out in force with several people checking out the new 911 and its latest features. Our kids liked the back seat:

In case you were wondering about the new PDK, it is so easy a child can do it, as Alexandra demonstrates from these two pics shot at almost the exact same instant from different angles:

My wife decided she liked the extra space for the kids and the PDK transmission and that we should buy a 911 too. Seems that the Porsche 911 marketing campaign is working on the family. Alexandra approves!

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of ALMS drivers Timo Bernhard and Emmanuel Collard. They were introduced to the audience at the dealership and fielded some questions from the crowd, anyone recognize the man holding the microphone?

Of course our son is not shy and after the Q&A session both Timo (left) and Emmanuel (right) sat down to autograph some RS Spyder posters. Here Kenny is asking them if he can go for a ride in their RS Spyder.

I think the answer was once he got his license. Here he is with the autographed poster which he loved:

Several dignitaries were on hand at the event as well. Shown here is Paul Gregor (right) who is our liason between PCA and Porsche. You've might have met him at Porsche Parade or Porsche Escape, etc. he has also been working behind the scenes to help make Croctoberfest a success.

Funny story, see where my car is parked in the above photo, that was right at the entrance of the event. Several people checked out my car thinking it was a new Cayman variant that Porsche was selling and they were asking "how much". The man to answer that question if the dealer was selling the car would be none other than James Marino shown in this next picture. If you need a new Porsche, James is the man to see at Jim Ellis.

That grin is because I told him he could drive it. Speaking of driving my car, this next person is someone who I want to try it so he can see what a modified Cayman drives like. He is Bill Buckley one of the chief instructors at the Porsche Driving Experience at Barber and someone who I keep puting the bug in his ear about allowing the Cayman on the track there for the school as opposed to autocross only.

Here is Heidi from PCNA, she's been driving a Cayman for the last 6 months and loves it and had a great rodent or was it marsupial? story about her own Cayman. She'll be on hand Friday as well at PCNA be sure and ask her to tell you the story I don't want to spoil it here.

And of course I saved the best for last. I first met Timo when he was driving for Kevin Buckler at the 2002 LeMans (see TRG thread and my photo of cleaning off the car) and then later caught up with him when I was with Mike Levitas of TPC Racing while at Rennsport Reunion III last November. It seems that Timo's personal car is a white Cayman S and we got to talking about the Cayman last time and I told him he needed to see mine. Well now he has. He spent some time checking it out, especially the Capristo exhaust system which we fired up for everyone to hear with valves closed then open. Under the covered overhand it caused quite a stir. Timo asked that I cheer him on Saturday and I told them of course we'd be there, he then left me with the request to paint my mirrors red like his (on the RS Spyder). Great guy and wish the team all the best on Saturday.

I chatted with a few other members, including one of our featured speakers David Stone as well as Marilyn (Caygirl) who got Timo and Emmanuel to sign her car, yes sign her race numbers on her new GT3 which she drove to Croctoberfest. I'll let her share that experience.

All in all a great time, lots of fun and the folks at Jim Ellis as well as from PCNA/Porsche were terrific. I think everyone is really going to be pleased with this Croctoberfest!

Now maybe if someone stops pulling the fire alarm at the Westin I can go back to bed...

I will be screaming my lungs out for Spyder #7! We gotta retain the championship. With three cars, maybe Penske can get the job done.

Paul rocks! My favorite Porsche guy! Timo & Emmanuel were so great about signing my numbers. I'm sure they get strange requests to sign all kinds of things. They were great guys & they loved my car.
