Anyone Siphon gas from their Cayman?

I live in Atlanta and the only gas available (if you could find it all) for the past several weeks has been 87 octane. It looks like the shortage is easing but I have a full tank of 87. I will probably just run it out but was wondering if anyone has had luck getting a hose into the gas tank of the Cayman to siphon out the gas?

I haven't siphoned gas since I was a kid. (I needed the gas to fill the lawnmower.)

If you have a full tank that would be a big project. I think I would just run the tank to half full and add premium.

We are starting to see gas in the Charlotte area. I think things will be better next week.

Have you considered adding some off that "octane boost" to the tank. You would then have to do some spirited driving to mix it!

Just use the gas up, and at the 1/2 way point, add some premium as gfspencer as suggested - it might take a couple of tanks to get you back to all premium, but trying to get gas out of your tank is dangerous, really. Don't add octane booster either - I take it you're driving on the street, so what's the point? The car will run fine on the 87 until you are able to get premium back into the tank, so I wouldn't worry about it unless you're running the Petit Le Mans today.

Well - I found the answer out anyway - No you can't. I have a small hose and about two feet into the neck it feels like it hits some kind of spring anti-siphon device. So I took everyones advice and drove it today to run the gas out of it!
No did not make the Petit Lemans - did hit the Croctoberfest dinner last night - very nice, Vic Elford was a great speaker. I sat with his co-pilot Dave at dinner, very entertaining, story after story.

Interesting about the apparent anti-siphon device....a few weeks back during the height of the Hurricane Ike aftermath here in Houston, gas was a precious commodity for the first few days or so. Both of my cars were filled up before the storm, but as my MINI's tank starting getting lower, I pondered siphoning some out of the Cayman if worse came to worse. The situation got better almost overnight as more power was restored and it became a moot point.

Coincidentally, I siphoned gas out of my Cayman yesterday. LOL. I am not kidding. I needed a little fresh gas to get my DR Trimmer started and our minivan and SUV were too low to get to the gas in the tank....so I tried the Cayman. I have one of these "super siphons" that I use for off road stuff. It has a valve inside that sucks up the gas by shaking it up and down. Works great. Yes, you can siphon gas out of the tank of a Cayman.

An off-topic comment here. Coming form Florida I have some experience with regional loss of power after a hurricane. Jim Cantore came to my town....and that's never a good thing!

After Frances and Jeanne, Florida required all service stations to invest in back-up power capability for just this type of eventuality. Long term power loss imperils the delivery of gasoline to the population after even a moderate storm landfall, and in the south, gasoline is pretty much necessary for survival. In the US, we simply refuse to invest in the infrastructure necessary to survive a CAT 3 landfall. We observe the lesson time after time....and refuse to learn much of anything.

The moral of the story is this, if you are expecting a hurricane landfall, expect a disruption in gasoline supply and prepare for it. It is important to recognize that trees are the principal problem. The longer it has been since the last landfall in your location, the more extensive the damage to the electrical distribution system is going to be because the power company has neither the money nor the authority to cull the trees that threaten large portions of the power distribution system. The speed of the approaching storm, or how long is it going to hang around and pound the system, has a significant impact on the amount of damage done. It is not just dependent on the "highest winds" that get so much attention on the Weather Channel.

Have a backup supply ready before the storm hits. If things go well, you won't need it and you simply use it and go on. If things go badly, you will have a reserve to use to fuel your cars...or a backup generator for yourself.
