Not a good day to have a cayman

at least...not a stock cayman s

Got invited to a BMW meet (wish i was in croctoberfest instead but i'm all the way in soCal) and hung out with a couple of M5 owners. Got invited to play bowling afterwards around 20 miles away. Not fun. Had a hard time catching up to these guys on the freeway (3 m5's, an mcouple, and an e63) and it was really scary in Sunday afternoon freeway traffic. I'd never taken the car past 120 before and these guys were all at 150plus.

I'd never thought a porsche -any porsche would have to catch up to sedans. I mean, i never knew how fast m5's were until today. then again, i'm starting to think our cars at 5.1/5.7 is slow? Luckily, they didn't rub it in. However, to top off an identity crisis, an older couple in the parking lot asked me later on during the night at a supermarket after bowling what my car was. I told the husband it was a porsche cayman. The wife , who didn't hear my answer, says, "So what is it? It looks like its trying to be a porsche"

Ugh...

I'm buying myself stage 2 for christmas. I don't expect to take on v8's with >150hp more then our cars, but i do expect to be at least within 3, 4 carlengths.

I wonder if carreras would've caught up.

here's a photo somebody from the mfest board posted

On the other hand, had you hit a series of S curves, you would have passed them all…

I'm rather mystified why you seem to think that their being Sedans, somehow, has anything to do with them being inferior at high-speed highway manoevering. Even though any of the Mcars are 100-200kg heavier, they're 507bhp out of the box... I've been told by an insider that a new-age M3 with a racing ECU and no other mechanical work can push out over 450bhp; the frontal area of the M3/M5 is perhaps 10-15% more than that of the Cayman, and perhaps their coefficient of friction is 0.01 or 0.02 worse as well, but hell does 150bhp make that seem irrelevant.

Being coupe or sedan is utterly irrelevant in this kind of comparisson; as the above poster mentioned you'd deffinitely see a difference where center of gravity, roll center, agility or skid-pad would be an issue, but straight line autobahn-eating you were pretty much lost before you started. With no intention of being negative, you're feeling uncomfortable at over 120 would have also made a difference; at high speed, not shedding it is critical and if you feel nervous with it it's all too easy to brush the brakes, shave off 15mph, then waste 10-12 sec building that up, by which time they've gone 80m ahead.

As to the lady who inquired about your car "trying" to be a porsche, perhaps you could infer it's just like her BMW is "trying", but failing, to be an Aston Martin. Or if you really want to rub it in, a CLS63 AMG Black.

Shame you felt so undermined. Car-club meetings should be a place where car lovers should enjoy each other's company rather than measure cocks.

Sorry, but going triple digits through traffic is just asinine. Find a safer way to enjoy your car's performance w/o endangering other motorists.

The M5 is a beast, even a modified (N/A) CS would be no competition in a straight line. If that's your thing, you picked the wrong car. OTOH, the Cayman would kill them in the twisties.

I used to be a live and let live type of guy but these kind of posts talking about groups of drivers hauling a$$ on public streets is really starting to bother me too. Not to say I've never exceeded the speed limit in my Cayman, but I've also taken it to a couple of trackdays and autocrosses where you can really experience the car's performance. A group of cars that big following each other on a public road at 150mph is Darwin's theory at work.

Is it just me, or does that lineup of Bimmers just look oh so the same?

Yeah, you took on some cars that are just too brutal in a straight line. The Cayman is not meant to be a straight line brawler,.....no Porsche is.

And as Chris S said, 120-150 mph in traffic is just plain dumb. All it takes is one wrong move by you or another motorist, and BAMM! a 20 car pile up,.......now all of a sudden there are dead children, dead moms and dads, etc. That's what I think about whenever such "opportunities" rear their heads,......how would my kids feel if dad was suddenly gone because of a simple act of stupidity?

I too gotta say that trying to hang with a bunch of idiots at 150+ is insane on public highways. A Cayman eats cars like this in the twisties. Just sayin'.....

Wow....150+ on a busy freeway sounds really foolish to me these days. There is very little margin for error at those speeds, and the error doesn't have to be yours for it to be fatal. I'm not making any judgments here but I have way too many people counting on me these days to take that kind of chance with my own life, much less someone else.

That being said, as a CS owner, a lineup of Caymans would look oh so much better than those BMW's all in a row! The Croctoberfest pics make the point!

As a Porsche owner, I have nothing to prove. Performance driving is something to be done at the track.

The thought of being stopped doing 150MPH in California, and being charged with reckless driving and attempted murder certainly don't appeal to me. Maybe that's why I never wanted a BMW

I think the reason you see them doing 150+ MPH on the street is because they can't do it on a track as well as the CS. Of the videos posted by CC members I have yet to see one where an M5 was passing a CS.

I must say I agree with all of the comments here. This was actually a first for me. This is my first porsche and i just passed my breakin period and I'd actually never gone this fast before. I don't think I can do it again. I'd seen back alley drag races when I was younger back in the day but never really seen it during the day.

I agree that its not right and its quite dangerous. They're good guys and just opening up their engines. During the whole ride, I saw maybe one possible dangerous maneuver (two of them tried to merge in the same lane) but for the most part, its "safe (relatively)" fast driving. I wish they'd told me in advance that this happens so at least I could've just gotten directions rather then follow other cars to places (and invited a friend so he can video). But yeah, no excuse.

For what its worth, while they were going fast, its mostly straightaways driving for a couple of seconds then slow down. Short bursts of speed. Its not a race to a destinatio nrace, but more like short sprints of drag. There were a couple of spectator cars (random cars that got on the freeway) that played too so i guess this is not an uncommon thing? It was funny, 2 girls in 2 seaprate cars rolled up too. One red clk and a white es300. Girl in the white es300 was hauling with one hand on the wheel only too! Crazy. (like i said, i was catching up the entire way) but yeah, its still very new to me. This should all be done at the track of course, but yeah, it was what it was. They're going on a track day next time and i'll go...but well, I'm going to take videos in the stands

Here's a sample video of how they do it. I guess it happens more often then not in Cali.

Leaving OC-Freeways

the speed and motion guys are the ultimate in daring

Here's a video of petfrog; a green 911 GT3 RS

I think it is all in your perspective. As a crowd, Cayman folks look at a straightaway as the shortest distance between two turns.
