Thought I'd make a poll to see how many people bought their Cayman S off the lot and how many people special ordered their Cayman S. I'd also like to know how many people asked for specific options and your dealer was able to find it from another dealer?
Thanks for thinking of the poll. I think that now you will see more 'off the lot sales'. I might have bought one off the lot if there was one to choose from!
There's only one Porsche dealer in Dubai so it's highly unlikely that an cancelled order or whatever, will be to my spec. Anyway, I'm spending a fair bit of dosh so unless it was absolutely perfect I'm happy to wait - The car will feel very 'mine' then. All adds to the ownership experience in my book.
I special orderd my Cayman S in December of 2005. It was delivered to the dealer about 2 weeks ago. I saw it and my gf even sat in it. Pretty cool.
But, the car I have came from the dealer on Jan 15. I stopped by on a nice sunshinny day to drive one, becasue I knew they would have one on the lot that weekend. As it turns out, somebody bailed on picking up their car (which I was driving) becasue the dealer refused to go lower after MSRP. Hmmn - wait for the car to arrive and then play games ... well, he walked. And the car was spec'd exactly as I would have ordered it. The differences were that the car I have has PASM and Adapive sport seats, which I really wanted, but didn't want to spend the money on. But I did anyway - waiting two months to not get the items I really wanted would have been really painful. ANd it was like a sping sday. And what an enjoyable day it was
I answered 'other' in the poll, but essentailly ordered my car AND bought it off the lot!!
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Cayman S - a portable amusement park
I ordered my car in Oct. 2005 - at that time special order was the only way Currently with a larger stock of cars, and the Internet allowing to search for cars all over the place one might be able to find a car close to special order and possibly better price - THANKS INTERNET !!!
I chose from a dealer's lot. He had seven in stock. Also I had two other dealers to choose from [three total] all within a 50 mile radius [Pittsburgh, PA. area]. My choice of options were quite broad among the seven. I pretty much didn't have to compromise on what I got. Very satisfied with the results / dealer.
As of now, out of 85 people, 61 (72%) people have special ordered. I'm sure the special order number is so high due to the car initially coming out and people ordering before they saw the car. I wonder if we will start to see the 'special order' number go down within the next few months now that dealers have vehicles on their lots? We'll see I guess.
