oil pressure gauge

After having a 964 and two 996s I really miss my oil pressure gauge. Why don't we have one in our Caymans?

Because the engine is in the middle of the car and doesn't sling oil around like those cars with engines hanging out the back!

Just the design I guess, I'll try to remember to ask tomorrow about adding an additional one.

Likely because realistically an oil pressure gauge is probably not necessary in modern engines using quality oil. If you lose pressure, an idiot light will let you know faster & better than a gauge. I think the days of gradual pressure loss are gone. I can't recall any circumstance when the oil pressure gauge in my 993 has been anywhere other than pegged when moving or maybe 3.5-4 bar when idling. OTOH, my '69 TR-6 was a different story.

Nevertheless, an array of gauges does look cool.

I think: 5 gauges is one more reason to buy a 911 :-) Okay, I don't think that, but I don't doubt the Porsche marketing department does. But oh, all those gauges in the 911... so nice!

Speaking of oil pressure and slinging oil around, the Cayman has an integrated dry sump, which is important in two instances, at least:

1. The oil warms up faster, meaning that the engine can get placed under load sooner (good news). The tak is on the engine and not in the fender.
2. The tire grip and slip factor has more effect on the lubrication (bad news)

On 2. The owners manual cautions against fitting the Cayman with racing tires that can add more grip, less slip, becasue the oil may be deprived to certain engine parts.

Those of you fitting racing tires to your car may wish to look into that, as the warranty will certainly be compromised, should there be a problem ...

The tires we're getting are DOT legal, therefore not strictly racing tires. The KUMHOS and others certainly do have more grip than the OEM ones, but there shouldn't be any problem. Obviously several have already tracked their cars, and I venture in the beginning we'll be a little cautious.
