It looks like it's running on a flat tire! If the sales in the UK aren't that good I can't see where an RS version would help since it will undoubtedly be more expensive anyway. Selling expensive sports car is as much about the "buzz" generated by enthusiasts as the actual capabilities of the car itself. The overall European "buzz" has ranged from leukwarm to overtly negative on the internet sites and many (but not all, as we know) of the magazines which set up the 911/Cayman comparisons with the intent of re-affirming their predetermined conclusions about the 911 being "better". This is probably a tuner car which I am willing to bet was known to the author, but suggesting that it may be a factory car makes for better copy.
I would think they be doing on going R+D work whatever. I mean they may yet decide to do a 'Clubsport' or 'RS' model. I hope we don't get into the last model 911 series were every week there was (Yet) another new 911 type!
My thoughts are that Cayman needs to lose 50 Kgs, get DSG get LSD get extra 50 BHP.......Than it will be spot on!

LSD - Limited Slip Differential
A limited slip differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity.
The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely– the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use however, such as driving off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.

I don't know what I saw, but... I was at my dealer in Norwalk, CA yesterday and sitting on the showroom floor was a white Cayman and the red name plate on the rear deckread 'Cayman RS.' I was there for other reasons and didn't take the time to look closely, except to note and wonder about the 'RS.'

How is it that the magazine like Autocar states that Cayman sales are less than expected and one of our new members says that orders in the UK are booked solid?? Anybody have any thoughts on this?

I think this was more likey to be a customers car to look like a RS car than an official Porsche. I don't think Porsche would just leave one of their pre-release cars hanging around a showroom !!
If it was a customer's car sitting on the showroom floor, somebody went to a lot of work to manufacture a name plate that said Cayman RS. Also note the car did have the new car window sticker in place. You may find what I saw difficult to believe - but I saw what I saw.
Pistonheads reports Porsche is preparing a boatload of new models to boost its bottom line in the wake of its major investment in Volkswagen and big-bux development of its upcoming Panamera. In addition to the models in development (911 Turbo Cab and Targa, 911 GT3 and entry-level Cayman) a stripped-down Cayman RS could be in the works for 2008. PH also speculates on new partnerships with Audi and fantasizes on a Porsche version of the VW R32 that would arise from the new association between the two companies. Take it slow, fellas; we’d expect the Porsche dream team to be pretty conservative about line expansion, though who knows what kind of family problem the VW buy-in was really about.
Okay, here's the scoop on that Cayman 'RS' at Mckenna Porsche in Norwwalk. I just called them and the salesguy just told me what they did is they took a standard Cayman and modded it.
He wasn't able to tell me what parts where used, but what's been changed are the wheels, suspension, and what sounded like a body kit. I tried to find out what brand of wheels, suspension, etc. but he didn't know and the guy who does wasn't available.
He did tell me that they are asking 13K on top of the car which is stickered at 68K. Lastly I found out the car is Guards Red.
Sorry I couldn't get more info for you all; best I can do without actually driving over there with my digi cam.
