Uusikaupunki or Zuffenhausen: Where will your Cayman be built?
Porsche AG says it depends on which options you order, but they won't say which options those are. Could it be that the options that are not available for a November, December or even January build are the options that will determine where your Cayman is built? Does that mean that if you want your Cayman built in Zuffenhausen all you need to do is order speed yellow seat belts?
Will a Cayman built in Zuffenhausen be a better Cayman than one built in Uusikaupunki?
Strange........doesn't even make sense to me to ramp up two factories for the same car.......at least for Porsche. When the first cars arrive, it will be interesting to see which factory built them, although I'm sure we will probably see some factory shots once production begins.
My 99 Boxster was a 'U' build but I noticed that the assemblies all said made in Germany. Build quality doesn't seem to be any different from 911 series as far as I can tell. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't all the M96 motors built in Germany and shipped to Finland? I thought that the only options that would have to be done in Germany would be paint to sample and leather to sample. Seems like everything else could be done in Finland.
You may be on to something there Dave. It would make a little sense for only the 'to sample' cars to be built in one factory. Maybe just one factory will be doing those now. I wonder where previous 'to sample' Boxsters were done though?
My 2000 Boxster S was built in Stuttgart, my 2005 Boxster S was built in Finland. No discernable difference to me in quality or reliability at this point.
The VIN # will have a 'U' in it for Uusikaupunki, Finland or an 'S' for Stuttgart, Germany. Just look at the VIN# to tell where the car came from. A small number of Boxsters are made in Germany still, not sure about the Cayman as we haven't seen any VIN#'s yet.
I have to say I'd rather it be made in Germany. It's part of the Porsche mystic for me. I'd prefer the dudes in the Black Forest, who have a legacyof mechanical engineering excellence builtover centuries, than say the dudes in Bowling Green, Kentucky (Z06). Nothing against Finland or Valmet, I don't anything about either...
