Cayman S - a portable amusement park
Yesterday I near paniced. I had left the FM on without my IPod turned on and there was hissing noise, I thought OMG what has happened! Then I turned off the radio, and felt stupid.
Larry, I was warned (by Porsche owners) before I bought my Cayman to expect CELs. As you are well aware, CELs are almost never a good thing. (Loose gas cap is the only one I can think of that is easily solved.) I am betting that the OBD II is VERY touchy or it could be our crappy gas.
For future reference...to everyone in California...make sure you have any CEL codes reset BEFORE you go in for a smog check. I was told that an exhaust related CEL is considered an automatic test failure even if the issue that caused it is no longer present.
I just found out about this one. Got PSM and Speed Sensor Fail during test and they said any CEL is cause for a failure. Now have to have CEL reset. Anyone in the Bay Area have an OBD tool?

PSM - Porsche Stability Management
While it can’t overcome the laws of physics, the revolutionary Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system does lend an added degree of balance and control to the Cayman’s mid-engine driving dynamics, inspiring surefooted confidence in corners and extreme situations.
A standard feature on the Cayman and Cayman S, PSM continuously monitors steering input, road speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration to calculate the actual direction of travel. If the car begins to steer off line, PSM instantly intervenes with precision brake inputs on individual wheels to help bring the car back onto the driver’s intended path.
If braking alone isn’t enough to correct the vehicle’s cornering line, PSM then calls on the Cayman’s engine management system, adjusting engine output as needed to help stabilize handling. PSM can also compensate in an instant for mid-corner changes in load resulting from deceleration or braking. When Sport mode is selected with the optional Sport Chrono Package, PSM’s threshold for intervention is raised, allowing for greater driver involvement. If you prefer driving without automatic PSM assistance, the system can be set to standby at any time. In this case, it will only intervene under heavy braking, where both front wheels exceed the ABS threshold.
For all of its technical ability, PSM goes virtually unnoticed in everyday driving situations, preserving the Cayman’s natural agility.
My experience with CELs depends on which dealer I go to. Just yesterday the car threw a visit workshop notice. Went to the nearest dealer to me that day and the put the car on the diagnostic computer and they came back and told me that both O2 sensors in front of the Cats were stuck open in the rich mode. Huh? They then told me that since I did not have a loaner for me if I could come back today to drop it off so that they could really trouble shoot it. Huh? So I tell them I will be back today but go my way down the road to another dealer. I ask them to take a look and they run it back to put it on the machine and in the time it takes me to walk to the washroom over to the waiting lounge for a water the service advisor finds me and hands me my keys and says all fixed they cleared the no none code message. The explanation is that sometimes this happens, they did not find the two front O2 sensors stuck open.
Now both dealers in my area are great each has their strengths but why would I get two totally different responses. Can the sensors change in the 30 minutes of driving that it took to get a second opinion. What gives with these sensors.
