Chatted with my friend at work, he reckons his air cool 993 285bhp is the last true porsche- fast enough to be fun, great noise, agile (due to its size), handling that reward good driver but punish rubbish ones!
I argue that the cayman s is a modern interpretation of the 993 except punishing the rubbish driver! I do agree with him that the air cool engine sounds more like the real deal than ours-a bit synthetic, any thoughts?
Yes, had all these little chats over the years, the 924/944/968..................not Porsche. well i drove for 8 days a 944 Turbo and it was vasty better than ANY other car i driven before or since. I yet to drive a Cayman, but i suspect it will better it.
At the end of the day its what is on sale now and from what i read/seen/and passanger seat.....its the Cayman...............and this is just the start of the Cayman story
if you want a more raw sound...stick on an aftermarket exhaust, there are at least a few out there now, and at least one brother on caymanclub has done a custom exhaust. that should solve the 'synthetic' sound problem.
as far as your friend....sounds like hes got blinders on...or maybe hes jealous of your cayman but cant bring himself to admit it...
The 944 turbos you mentioned have gobs more power than the Cayman. Cayman feels anemic power-wise (compared to the turbo) The Cayman is a better handling car with more torque in lower RPM's I was also surprised that both the Cay and the 944 T both turn about 2500 RPM's at 60 MPH. I would have thought the Cay would have taller gears in final drive.
They all have their pluses and minuses and they're all real Porsche's as far as the factory is concerned. The 993 actually has very little in common with the "original" 911 series other than the aircooled rear engine. The 993 is an "evolution" on the 911 concept as was the 964, 996, and now the 997. The Cayman has more in common with the 904 than the 911 series, but I think most well informed people would consider the 904 is a real Porsche, and Porsche certainly accepted the racing victories it earned! The "real" Porsche debate is best left to those that have their own reasons for perpetuating it.
Thanks for all the backing! I was always a bit suprise that so many people out there still hold the view that all non-911 porsche are basically Audi in disguise! I also came across a carrera s owner who is disgusted that the cayman s share so many things with the 997!
That's probably why a decent second hand air cool 993 will cost more than an average 996!!
Talking about 944 and 968, I had driven a 968 and my dad owned a 944 when I was a small boy. They were fab cars with sublime handling-----In the 80s, 911 is a handful. Wonder how many fellow cayman owner out there are 944 ex-owner?
I think the cayman s is a great spiritual successor to the 968. Hope they willdo a cayman similar to the 968 club sport!!!!
I owned a great 993 C2S. Great fun both on and off the track. The Cayman beats it 7 ways to Sunday both on and off the track. I'd love to have been able to keep both.
The last 'real' Porsche was the 356 ... or was it the 911? ... no, maybe the 993 ... I know it wasn't the 964 ... and certainly not that boxy VW 914 ... nor any of the front engine or even rear engine water pumpers, or the pepper truck. Oh, I know, ... actually, it was the last Porsche to leave the assembly line today. They're all real Porsche's. Your friend needs to yank his head out of his exhaust pipe & let the fumes clear from his brain. That same narrow minded junk has been spewed w/almost every major direction shift/improvement by Porsche.
My recently sold rather heavily modded 993 was (is) a great car, but a couple of test drives & a track session in a Cayman convinced me that those folks at Porsche haven't been sitting on their asses for the past 10 years. The Cayman S is a seriously wonderful street/occasional track car w/many of the same 993 attributes. It enticed me in ways neither the 996 nor 997 could.
Oh, and if your friend truly places a high value on a car that will 'reward good driver but punish rubbish ones,' he should replace his ABS equipped, power steered, understeering, highly evolved & pretty well tamed 993 for a 911 at least a decade or more older.
We still have a '98 993 Cabriolet with 44k miles on it. It sits in the garage most days while my wife can't imagine a day without her Cayenne Turbo ( though she is eyeing the Cayenne Turbo S ) which many feel is not a real Porsche and I live to drive my Cayman S daily. As much as I love the Cab, there's not much it does that the Cayenne Turbo doesn't do better, and the Cayman even better. I remember when driving my Boxster S, I would occasionally flash my lights at 993s and 996s who would turn up their noses at my "budget car." I guess snobs are everywhere. Me personally, when I kid in a built Honda or Mitzi pulls up next to me at a light and revs his engine, I smile, give him the "thumbs up" and let him feel proud about his car. My ego doesn't depend on putting others down. I'm a surgeon. Would your friend also think the surgery we did 20 years ago was better than what we do today? Ask anyone who had the open gallbladder surgery -- "older" "requiring more skill" etc are not good things. Not necessarily bad, but progress builds and hopefully inproves on what came before it. Greg
U got a very good combination of cars at home. A Porsche for all occasion!
I agreed with you about the surgery analogy. However there are still surgery that cannot be performed keyhole eg. CABG. I always think Porsche always manage to evolve their cars 1 step towards perfection. Don't know how they do it!!!
Can you imagine what the next generation of cayman s going to be like?
andy, your buddie is in denial. the days of 993 is OVER. has he driven a GT3? i sold my prestine 993c2s within 3 seconds after i took my GT3 over 8000rpm.
