My Cayman Meets The Mass State Police

Even though the ground was wet this morning I decided to take the spotless Cayman to the market. It's a ride I've been taking with my Porsches for the last 20 years. It's a good drive - a combination of hard curves and country roads, a nice sweeping entry ramp, and a great chicane. So with Brewster, my Jack Russell as copilot, we headed out and had our driving fun before the final approach - a 40mph, well traveled road that I knew was watched on a regular basis by old smokey.

I saw the grey & white crown vic parked perrpendicular to the road a good 100 yards away. I was at the speed limit and he wasn't broadcasting a radar signal. I passed his position and thought nothing of it. Two minutes later blue lights filled my rear view mirror. He was after me.

Brewster sat patiently as I produced my license and registration. The officer was gone for 5 minutes while he ran my numbers. I hadn't had a violation stick in over 20 years. My record was clean. He returned and told me the reason for the stop was because I was missing my front license plate -- asked if I had one. I said yes and he politely said that I needed to put it on the car. I agreed.

"Does this replace the 911?" was his next question. Ah, a Porsche enthusiast! I told him it didn't and went on to give him a mini education on the Cayman - he seemed impressed.

He handed me back my paperwork and bid me good day. I smiled and breathed a sigh of relief.

The down side of the story is now I have to mount that ffffing plate.

Hope all of you have the same luck if (when) you get stopped.

My dealer in CT told me that 90% of sport cars don't have front plates. I told him to mount the bracket for me just in case I decide to mount my plates. I guess I had better do so on my Cayman S. Darn!!!!

Thank you sir for sharing your story. It is all the motivation I need.

I wasn't so lucky! Got a ticket and now I have the tow hook kit on with my front plate. I guess it's still better than drilling the holes on my front bumper.

Thanks for the sympathy guys - it's really going to change the lines of the nose of the car.

Of those of you who have the tow hook mount -- do you likie it - the way it looks?

At least the stock plate mount is in the center of the bumper - nice and symetrical....and more aerodynamic I would expect...

I keep thinking that someone will find a neat way to mount the plate in that vacant area under the nose for all of you in states that require front plates.

Don't forget that some of us have a third radiator under the nose in that "vacant" area.

Who has a third radiator? My Boxster S had a third, but I've never seen a Cayman S with a third, and certainly here in the desert south west I can use all the cooling I can get! Greg

The third radiator I am referring to is the one for the Tiptronic.

Great story, not good about the plate. I have been lucky so far. I do keep my temporary mount in the front truck, sure hope I don't have to use it.

Russ, does the mount rattle around when you are driving or did you secure it in there somehow. I've been wondering whether to keep it in the front trunk, but I don't want it banging around.
