Well we finally got the official word back from Porsche on the Cayman Register logo, for those who might have somehow forgotten it, here it is again:
The 'GOOD' news is that the logo does not violate any trademarks and Porsche has no issue with the use of this logo from a 'legal' perspective. However....
The 'BAD' news is that Porsche will not endorse the logo as it conveys a feeling inconsistent with their marketing direction and branding of the Cayman.
I know I know, how do you choose a vicious killing machine as the name of your car and then say that it is inconsisten with your marketing direction? So what does this mean? This means that if we want to use this on the web or shirts, or whatever with Porsche's support and approval that we need to make the crocodile in the logo less aggressive. I have had the request made that we do so and if we do come up with something less aggressive it will likely clear all hurdles, both legal and marketing/branding.
If we do create another less aggressive logo it does not prevent us from using the aggressive one on our own for specific projects, etc. we just won't have PCA or PAG support for doing so. With that in mind I'd like to ask the resident graphics experts here if they can take the existing logo and somehow make it less aggressive. The first thought that comes to my mind is to remove the snarling teeth near the back of the mouth, but I'm open to lots of less aggressive interpretations!
Thanks for your support!

Get rid of themolars, which really don't belong on any reptile as far as I know.
Actually a satisfied smile would be nice, making it look as though the croc had just eaten a 500+ hp Viper.

Hmmmm......probably too unrefined for Porsche. A croc is an aggressive predator, so it becomes somewhat ridiculous and certainly inconsistent to "civilize" the image. Agree about the molars, they don't even chew their food, just rip it up and swallow it in large hunks, bone and all. Makes you wonder what Porsche was thinking when they came up with the name in the first place? Might want to abandon the croc altogether. I remember that outlines of the car were not permissible. I assume that still holds, including an outline of the two rear fenders with a roof in between? Two more thoughts, neither of which may be any good, but nothing ventured.....1) The 18" Cayman S wheel is strongly associated with the car, that could be substitute logo, and 2) the instrument cover with the hump over the tach is also (still?) unique to the Cayman. Both could be worked into a logo.
If you make the eye dark green instead of red, and get rid of the angry-looking smile, Porsche would probably go for it.
Also, I think it should be a lot skinnier. Caymans have very skinny snouts with a bulbous nose on the end. It should not look like a crocodile or an alligator, as it is a totally different animal. The one you have there is too fat.
Give him a French manicure; make his eye pink; add a little mascara; and then apply a sexy 'broke back mountain' smile. They ought to be happy then ...

How about removing the croc altogether and replacing with our number designation '987' to satisfy PAG and PCA and keeping our current logo for those of us who prefer it?I, SWAMPCROC,do not endorse any changes to the current logo.
Is there a suggested way that our membership can communicate to PCA and PAG our collective feelings about this? Group letter? Class action?
