I would like to get a 3M plastic bra for my basalt black cayman. Since black shows every speck of dust I'm worried that the edge will show too much on the hood and fenders.
I had a clear bra on an arctic silver Boxster and I could hardly see it at all even though it only covered half the hood.
Does anybody have the 3M product on a basalt black and are the edges obnoxiously obvious? Also, what did you pay for it?
I have an arctic grey which is very dark (sometimes it looks almost black) and yes, the film line is very obvious. I have Invicta not 3M film however. YMMV

I have a basic black and only added the film to the mirrors and front bumper and skipped the hood. The bumper gets the most impact from bugs and rocks.

I have the 3M product on my regular 'ol black CS, and while you can see the edge on the hood and fenders, it's not enough that it really bothers me... but everyone's view of what's obnoxiously obvious will be different. I'm really glad I got it on the hood though, I've taken several 1000 mile round trips up to SF from Las Vegas and would have had a lot of dings on the hood had it not been there.

I havehad the 3M product on a dark red MDX for 4 years and the line was noticeable when you took the time to look for the first year or so and has gotten more noticeable with age. On the plus side there are no nicks under it. I opted not to get the product on my new 987S after deciding that nothing compares to a beautifully waxed hood. Whichever way you go don't look back - there are pros and cons to each.
I have basalt black and got the 3m bra abot2.5 months ago. When it was first installed they said leave it in the sun and all wrinkles, etc. will come out. They didn't so I had them redo the whole job. It looks so much better but, There is a faily noticible line across the hood. I expected that. It does bother me but not to the point I would take it off. Now I feel better about it because I do not have 1 nick on the car. I'm sure without the bra I would have quite a few by now.

I also had the clear bra installed on my current BlackBMW X3 as well as my previous Sapphire Black BMW 530i. The edge shows on both much more than on my current Seal Grey Cayman S. However, it still looks better than white paint chip marks. Make sure that if you detail your car after the bra is installed, you use masking tape on the edge of the clear bra. This will help you fromaccumulation and bonding of wax and other chemicals to the edge, which might turn white or other color (depending on the wax you use).
FYI there is a kit that covers the entire front hood and quarter panels... I was discussing options with my installer and he mentioned this to me as an option for my customers... I didn't feel at the time it was necessary 3 cars (artic silver, seal gray, cobalt blue) because of the added cost for such a large amount of material...
However reading your post I would go for the full coverage on the vehicle. I think the expected cost would be around $1500-$1800...
