Cayman Horn - What's the deal?

Ok, Guys and Gals, I had a nasty, almost life-shattering experience on the highway today, and I feel that the horn in our cars need to be replaced, for it didn't do a damn thing from preventing the other driver from running me off of the road. I know that the onus is ultimately on the other driver for their lack of attention and piss-poor driving skills. But, the weak horn must be corrected.

Do you think a model like this would fit/suffice:

http://www.autobarn.net/noname6.html

Has anyone modded their horn? I did a search, and did not find a thing on this exact topic.

Thanks for the info,

C.J.

I'm thinking about fitting some surface to ground rockets. No horn seems to penetrate the drug addled, cell phone obsessive 'drivers' that I seem to encounter. www.griotsgarage.com has an interesting one also. (hella horns for $$70)

What SF said & add music blaring. Historically, Porsche horns have been anemic. Better to rely on defensive driving & Porsche handling/braking because you can't count on the horn to have any effect.

Back in the day, I had Framm air horns in my TR-6. Now those were a set of lungs.

As an aside, my office window overlooks a busy intersection a block from a fire/EMS station. I'm amazed at how hard it is for the ambulance/firetruck drivers to get traffic to yield even with lights flashing & sirens & air horns blaring.

I agree that these days, enough attention is not paid to the horns on cars either...

I love using my horn but agree that the horn equipped on the Cayman doesn't really get the job done. I think our horn sounds too refined. Does that make sense?

Close....actually, my scanners produce close 100 dB, and some tests lastup to 3 hours. Plus, the women in my life can only makeme go blind .....

No matter what, you must be a defensive driver. That falls true especially when driving our Cayman's. I am going to do an install by weeks-end, and post my findings.

Thanks for the info guys.

In some of my previous cars:

www.thewho.info/wfc/cars.html

I had the dealer remove the 'Cadillac' sounding horns of Germany present and replace them with my favorite horns - the two-tone Mercedes-Benz horns of the 70s & 80s.

Unfortunately, the process is a little difficult - removal of the front bumper, creating a bracket to hold them, etc. and sometimes an electrical difference, causing 'something' to blow out. Typically the dealer charged ~$200-$250 for the install and the horns themselves were ~$35/each.

I also inquired about air horns (I like the way they sound too), but was told there wasn't a lot of room under there and was discouraged...

I'm not sure why German auto makers changed their horn sound from something 'effective' to something that sounded 'American', but the results are pretty bad...

Not sure if I'll change the horns when my new Cayman S <finally> arrives, but...

I'm with you Will. Can't recall ever using my horn so far. Need to make sure it works next time I drive it.

Last year at my '98 Boxsters annual service I was told the horn was not working. Since I never use it (apparently) I had no idea how long it had been out. Seems there is a plastic piece that is prone to failure in hot climates (FL).
