when someone asks you if the cayman is just a boxster coupe?
don´t get me wrong: i love my CS(got it last friday, waiting for the sun to come out to take some pics), but after the announcement about Boxster MY 2007 getting the same engine, i dont really know what to say..
background: someone asked me this question y-terday, and while i said that the CS had a totaly different motor, this isnt true anymore...
well, yeah...the guy also asked why i didnt go for a carrera (because my CS is so heavily optioned the jump would have been very modest).. i told him that : 1. you see a carrera 7 times a day (incl the older ones), but we only have like 3 caymans (one is mine) 2. midengine 3. i feel too young for a carrera.
but still it bugs me: Porsche hasnt explained anything....
I think the obvious answer is that at this point in time and marketing aside is that the Cayman is essentially a Boxster coupe. There are some subtle styling differences but with the same engine, essentially same dimensions and very similar interiors what else can you honestly say. That being said, Porsche has done a terrific job of putting a very nice roof on it. I think it looks better than the boxster and the 911 for that matter. But it is essentially a boxster couple and that isn't bad at all. I just wish it was priced the way every other car maker prices coupes relative to convertibles. Oh well.
If the answer is 'no,' why? Interior identical, exterior almost the same, motor the same, most (or all) of the rest of the mechanical systems the same, options and their prices the same. I can't see how these are other than two very similar variants of the same car (except for the total prices, of course).
Funny ! I was asked that question moments ago, even after reading this post. My answer was, boxster is like 5 years old body design. Cayman S is totally new body design. Hardtop gives it more rigidity when going faster. So I opted for the new look, new design. Here in silicon valley, boxsters are like BMW's. Everyone has them, but the CS is brand smacking new. That what I said. No retort back.
Just say, 'Yup and I bought into the marketing scheme.' I'm sure no one would be expecting that answer. Then they'll probably leave you alone after that so you can focus on than

I agree with futurecayman. It's essentially the long awaited Boxster coupe. It's not only accurate now, it's also the easiest answer. If anyone asks, just say 'Yes.'
Tell them to drive the two cars back to back - there's more to it than just 'the same motor.' And if they can't tell the difference, then they should be in the market for, or should be driving a Corolla.
