Want to go to the track (where though?)

I have never been to a track in my Porsche, nor have I ever been to a road-course type track in any car.

My track experience is limited to the drag-strip (about 10 times) and 1 Autocross event.

I am willing to spend a few hundred dollars (give or take) and would like to get some track time through a PDE or regular track event in my Cayman S. I am having trouble finding a good place/event to do this. My car is stock and I am a Zone 3 PCA member. I don't see any events near Dothan, AL. I would be willing to drive a 2-3 hours during a weekend.

Any advice on how to meet my desires?

Shane

Call your local PCA Zone president and he will be glad to answer that question.

Closest track to you is Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham. PBOC will be running driving schools there in September, October and November. Check out www.pbocflorida.com.

There are so many tracks and DE organizations out there. Just surf around for them. You can start at www.grmotorsports.com - a good site for a great magazine.

Helo,

If you are willing to make a slightly longer drive - ~900 miles you could attend Croctoberfest and get a bunch of track driving in and be instructed by instructors with Cayman experience, and of course meet a lot of us and enjoy our company. We just had a PCA DE (Drivers Education) at Road Atlanta last weekend at Road Atlanta. I saw one Cayman S driven by Bob Dawson. Drive from Dothan to Road Atlantais 250 miles. Barber though is much closer. Check out this link for Peachstate region www.peachstatepca.org and click on driving events on menu at top of page. The next DE is weekend of October 28th & 29th. Registration should start pretty soon.

Shane, as mentioned above Barber at Birmingham is the closest track to Dothan. It is also new and very good from all reports though I have not driven it yet. Also home of the very expensive PDE. Next closest is Road Atlanta also a great track with lots of elevation changes. I have done a couple of DE's there and 5 or 6 races. Peachstate is an excellent PCA region that has several DE's per year there. Next closest is Roebling Road just west of Savanah. I have also done a few DE's and several races there. It has plenty of run off space and except for being flat as a pancake is a good track to start on. Probably the safest of the three and the least challenging to learn. Florida Crown region and some other FL regions have DE's there several times a year. Check pca.org for all the regions in AL, GA and FL and you should find a variety of choices. (Full disclosure, I may be a bit biased as a DE instructor for 20+years first andmostly with PCA.)

I think you will find that PCA offers the most DE's at the lowest cost with the best instructors. If you are so inclined you can progress into PCA Club Racing after enough DE experience. In fact PCA originated the whole DE track event concept 30 years or so ago.

Re Dothan I went through primary pilot training (USAF) just south of you atMarianna, FL in class 55U. Twenty hours in PA-18's and 120 hours in T-6's. First duty station was also nearby at Tyndall AFB.
