Shane, as mentioned above Barber at Birmingham is the closest track to Dothan. It is also new and very good from all reports though I have not driven it yet. Also home of the very expensive PDE. Next closest is Road
Atlanta also a great track with lots of elevation changes. I have done a couple of DE's there and 5 or 6 races. Peachstate is an excellent
PCA region that has several DE's per year there. Next closest is Roebling Road just west of Savanah. I have also done a few DE's and several races there. It has plenty of run off space and except for being flat as a pancake is a good track to start on. Probably the safest of the three and the least challenging to learn. Florida Crown region and some other FL regions have DE's there several times a year. Check
pca.org for all the regions in AL, GA and FL and you should find a variety of choices. (Full disclosure, I may be a bit biased as a DE instructor for 20+years first andmostly with
PCA.)
I think you will find that
PCA offers the most DE's at the lowest cost with the best instructors. If you are so inclined you can progress into
PCA Club Racing after enough DE experience. In fact
PCA originated the whole DE track event concept 30 years or so ago.
Re Dothan I went through primary pilot training (USAF) just south of you atMarianna, FL in class 55U. Twenty hours in PA-18's and 120 hours in T-6's. First duty station was also nearby at Tyndall AFB.
