First post; thanks for those who mend and tend this forum.

928S 1987
All ****.
The number of mechanical, electrical other failings on these downright horribly made Porsche' had me swearing I would never buy another one. One trailing throttle oversteer triple 360, out of nowhere, in the 911 has sworn me off that rear ended, psychologogically perverted monster.
So why am I here? To buy a Cayman S
Tell me Porsche has gotten better after all those years. Or are they still thoroughbreds with multiple, nagging injuries that have to be driven to be fixed as often as driven for fun.

Based on your post, you better read up on RMS umbrella of oil leaks and potential engine replacements before you buy any modern Porsche with the M96 engine design. Modern Porsches are much better than their predecessors in terms of day to day reliability, but they are neither bulletproof nor troublefree.
nearly 5 years with a 996 turbo and not a single issue with it at all...nothing. and my good friend has 125k miles on his 03 turbo and never had an issue either...still has the original cluch in it in fact. Most reliable car I've ever owned.
Thanks for the input, guys. Truth be told, there are several foreign made, high performance cars that have solid service records. I don't mind typical maintenance and repairs but look at this list which is half of what I had to put up with back then. All cars started brand new and none exceeded 20,000 miles.
911S - A/c froze, wiring fire, sunroof air deflector jammed, motor mount broke - sold.
944 - 17' wheeled, rapid shaking at 50-70 mph; car taken back by Porsche @ 2,500 miles
928S - 4 shocks replaced, manual tranny fell out on road three times w/ wife and two young children as occupants, wipers took two months to get, car parked, windshiel wiper flew off, pass side glass shattered rolling down at car wash, two sets of synchronizers, misc electrical..on and on and on.

DaveC is on the money on this one. They are much better, though, truth be told, the years/models you cite there, can't be considered Zuffenhausen's best work, that's for sure... I've had old and new cars, and the old ones all have their foibles. As for the new ones, I've had from new:
1999 Carrera - one of the first 996s delivered in May, 1998 - had a clutch slave cylinder go kaput @ 150 miles (yes, 150, leaked fluid all over the garage floor)... airbag light on (twice, ECU, belt buckles replaced), RMS leak (fixed - new seal installed, no further problems) ... all repaired under warranty. Traded in at 4 years and 24K miles for a new 2002 twin turbo. The people who bought the car from the dealer are friends, and they now have 52k on the car no trouble at all since they've had it.
2002 Twin turbo - had two different idler pulleys go bad at two separate times (both replaced under warranty) - other than that, no problems at all. Traded in after 4 years and 26k miles for the Cayman.
Cayman - no problems at all, no squeaks, rattles, leaks... nothing but fast fun.
