6 speed drivers

I was wondering what makes Cayman owners chose 6 speed over TIp

Is the fun of rowing gears ?

I am curious to know from porsche fans why many ignore 6 speed Tip and buy the 6 speed

I have driven sticks since I learned how to drive. Its a sports car it should have a stick. But If my driving was a lot in stop and go traffic or was unable to shift gears a lot I would have gotten the tip.

The most fundamental reason is that sports cars (IMHO) are meant to be driven, not guided along like an appliance

I would imagine the second reason would be because of the severe HP hit you take with an auto. Now if it were true DSG paddles as in the TT, no human can shift faster than the computer ...

By passing on the stick you miss one helluva gearbox. Precise, smooth, and quick. It's fantatstic. Tip would be boring.

I just would not own a car with an automatic... all my cars have manual transmissions, including my BMW 5 series wagon, and Honda Insight, By the way - the Tiptronic is a 5 speed... and make no mistake - despite the buttons on the wheel, it's still an automatic.

I've never owned an automatic. When I drive one it just feels weird, almost like I'm not driving just riding along.

I always had a manual car since I learnt how to drive. And can not imagine Cayman with TIP. Cayman S has the best manual ever, at least with the cars I have driven or owned compared. The shifter is awesome, so easy to use and drive.

Maybe DSG type transmission would be great as well, but I enjoy a true manual more than anything else. Definitely MT over Tip. Meanwhile I got a loaner the other day as a regular Boxter, and did not really like the transmission or the shifter. Cayman S has a much better one.

I had the opportunity to spend a long weekend with a Boxster S in the Napa area three years ago. It was a wonderful experience, but the car had a Tiptronic transmission and that muted the fun by quite a bit. When it came time to buy the CS there was no debate - it's a sports car, it should have a stick. I know that the new automanual trannies may be faster than I am and I know that the F1 teams all use similar transmissions, but, hey, they have to pay those guys millions of dollars. I'll drive my 6-speed CS for free!

I too just can't imagine a sports car with an automatic transmission. The complete 'feel' of the car just isn't the same without running through the gears manually.

The TIP is actually a 5 speed. Plus it adds weight to the car which in a car like this you don't want to do.

There are two reasons I prefer a manual to an automatic. First, I want complete control over the gearbox and I want it instantly, not when the automatic decides I should have it. Secondly, I don't want the power loss that an automatic generates. That said, the new double clutch sequentials will be a good thing since they will not suffer from either of the two drawbacks above. The only downside is that all that double clutch heel and toe stuff I spent a lifetime learning is now useless.

It is more fun to play with, after all the thing is a toy. Every one here would like more HP and ultimately speed from these toys and you are giving up both with the tiptronic.

I think it connect you so much morewith the car. There is something almost primal about stirring the box in time with the engine, like holding the reins of a fine horse.
