Year-to-Date Sales Up 11 Percent

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States and Canada, today announced that sales for the month of September in the U.S. were up 3 percent over the same month in 2005. Year-to-date, September's results helped the Porsche brand continue to outpace last year's record-setting figure.


For September 2006, Porsche reported new-car sales in the U.S. of 2,211, 3 percent ahead of 2005<span id="bwanpa0">’[/quote]s figure for September of 2,144. So far in 2006, Porsche is continuing its pace for a record calendar year recording a nine month total of 26,411, which is 11 percent ahead of 2005<span id="bwanpa1">’[/quote]s year-to-date total of 23,819.


Porsche 911 model lineup has helped drive Porsche<span id="bwanpa2">’[/quote]s sales in the U.S. all year. In September, sales of the 911 were up 11 percent from the same time last year with totals of 730 versus 659 in September of 2005. For the year, 911 sales are 9,162 so far in 2006, which is 25 percent ahead of the same period last year. The Boxster/Cayman series, which enjoyed combined sales of 733 for the month and a 59 percent increase over the same month a year prior, has recorded a year-to-date total of 9,111, an increase of 42 percent compared with the same period last year.


In addition, dealers sold 541 Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicles compared to 413 for the same period last year.

Looking at the numbers, it seems Cayman is certainly eating into sales of both Boxster (base and S models)and Carrera (at least the base models). Cannibalization.

Canniblization of a product line can be a good thing. Ask Microsoft, who cannibalizes their products every two years. InPorsche's case, they make more money on the Cayman &amp; S than they do on the Boxster through the price differential with near identical cost. That is good business acumen on their part. Frankly, they could probably care a less if any Boxsters are sold at all if they are buying the higher margin Cayman, life is good....
