I'm sure that we have all been asked this question at least once. I was asked again the other day when I told somebody how much I paid and came up with what will now be my standard response:
"When they take out the rear seat and move the engine forward three feet, I will."
I just ordered and I could have afforded a 911, but after driving a C2, C4, CS and Cayman back to back I just like the way the Cayman felt better. It was so solid and planted. The front end on the Carreras seemed light.
One of the first cars I ever drove was a former brother-in-law's 911S way back as a 15 year old. I've always respected them but never lusted for one. When I saw the Cayman, it was love at first sight. I have seen some suggest that for the price of a Cayman you can get a nice used 911, but I don't want one. I'm probably not the salesman's best customer either because I don't see myself "upgrading" to a 911 in the future but who knows?
I was not sure what I would get for the extra $15 grand. I was sure, however, how I could use the extra $15 g's. A base Carerra, while classic looking and a capable performer, is kind of mundane in the sports car world. The Cayman has a more exotic look to it. I don't want to leave out how suprised I was to learn how many parts the two cars share. I don't know how much it cost Porsche to construct each car, but I would be suprised if the 911 cost much more, if at all.
been a fan of the 911 since i was 13 years old. at 36 and able to afford either one, i was more intrigued with the thought of buying a cayman s. the 911 will always be one of the most beautiful cars in the world to me, however i wanted a cayman s. i love it and have no regrets! plus, i don't make a habit of talking about what i paid, its only my business.
I've had 2 911's. I have been waiting for this car, the CS, ever since I first drove a Boxster. 911's are great but the handling of this car is too good not to have. The fact that it costs less is even better.
Good someone started this thread, thanks NewPorscheguy...
A lot of people think it's my first Porsche, when they ask me that question..
they shut up when I say I got rid of my 911 for it..LOL
If I can afford the CarreraS model, then it would be a difficult decision.. So I drove the base 997 First to compare , didnt do anything for me, my old 996 is even faster...the CaymanS is such a joy to drive.....
An all too common question from those who don't really know. I just say the mid engine configuration is superior to the rear engine, plus it's hotter looking.
For me it was money. At this time in my life I knew I should be packing it away for retirement. I was ready to buy a new BMW and then I saw the new Cayman, took a test drive and that was all I needed. The last 911 I drove was back in 1979.
