I noticed something odd about the way my door windows behave today: If I used the remote to unlock the doors, the windows on both sides drop about 1/16". It doesn't drop nearly as much as when you open the door, but enough to see if you look for it. Then, if I arm the car, turn the ignition on, or open and close a door, that window will go back up to its normal position.
Is this normal? Or, does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong? Has this happened to anyone else?
I've had the car about a month, and never noticed it before, but then I wasn't looking for it either. The last few days, when I started the car in the morning, I thought I heard the passenger door window move, but didn't think to look for it until today. It's a little odd to sit in the car, pressing the remote button, and watching the windows go up and down a little everytime the car is armed and disarmed.
I agree. Audi TT's (at least) have the same feature. It's designed to protect the weather stripping and prevent air compression/decompression upon opening and closing.
Maybe I am not clear on what you are saying. When I open the door the window opens slightly, but when I use the remote lock or unlock my windows do not move, not until the door opens?
When I start the car with both windows fully up, the left hand door goes up a tiny bit more (or try to) and it does it every time. The right side does nothing extra. Do we put up with it or not?

What I mean is that, without touching the doors or door handles, lock and unlock the car using the remote. On my car, when unlocking, the door windows on both sides drop about 1/16". Then, when locking, the door windows go back up that 1/16". I find that it's much easier to see (and hear) when sitting inside the car.
The door windows are supposed to drop about 1/4" when you open the doors, and then go back up after the doors are closed. This is normal behavior, and I believe what people have been talking about above. The movement I'm asking about only involves window movement when locking and unlocking the car using the remote, without touching a door or door handle.
Try this: Unlock the car, get into one of the seats and close both doors. Using the key remote, lock the car. Then, look at the manufacturers markings in the lower, rear corner of the nearest door window (gives a point of reference to make it easier to see movement). Then, unlock the doors using the remote -- on my car, the windows drop a hair. Then, lock the door with the remote -- on my car, the windows go back up a hair. Also, listen when you do this. You should hear the thunk of the locks engaging and disengaging and the clicks of the relay flashing the parking lights -- on my car, I can also hear a brief whirr from the window motors as they go up or down that tiny amount.
Just spoke with my dealer service representative, and he said that window movement does not sound normal -- he said the windows shouldn't move when locking or unlocking the car with the remote. So, I'm bringing it in tomorrow morning for them to take a look at it -- will post an update once I have some news.
Well, I took the car to the dealer this morning, to have the window movement checked. I demonstrated it to the the service advisor, he pulled it into a service bay and hooked up the computer, then went and got the keys for a new CS on their lot, and finally came back to me with a report of "it's normal". Of couse, it sure would have been nice if they could have told me that before I drove to Alexandria and back during morning rush hour traffic....
Anyway, the service advisor printed out and handed to me a statement from PCNA about this. It reads (verbatim):
Quote:
This is normal function for the 06 997 and 987 models. As soon as the remote button is pushed to unlock the doors, the window motors drop the windows ever so slightly, so that if the door is opened quickly the window does not catch on the door seal. When the key is turned in the ignition, if no one got into the passenger side you'll here the passenger side window go back up.
Another new feature the dealers in colder climates might notice is a "break-loose" function of the wondow motors. If the outside temperature is very low you'll here the window motor cycling like it's trying to move the window up and down. This is to try to "break loose" any windows that might be frozen to the seal.

So, thanks everyone for your help and input. I guess it's just another one of the many things that makes the car so unique and "lovable".
