Saw one, sat it one: Comments

First, my wife like it, always a major hurtle.
Second, the grill and fog lights, which I consider a questionable styling element, aren't visible when you are standing over the car.
Third, the cockpit is narrow. My shoulders rub the door. This may be a knockout for me.
Fourth, the stock gearshift has a ridiculously long throw.
Fifth, the headliner is some strange material that my wife thought was like the fuzzy side of Velcro and to me seemed like a type of foam. Not impressive, IMHO. The sun visors where covered in a rather cheap vinyl.
Sixth, trunk space seems quite good, both front and rear.
Seventh, the stock non-power seats are quite comfortable.
Eighth, and last, the dealer said the Porsche driving experience gets 1500 miles on steel rotors and pads. On the ceramic stuff, they get 8000 miles with just a pad change. He said the brake service is $1500 (some with experience please confirm). At that rate, the ceramic brakes may even be a cost effective option.

Am I missing something here? Your eighth comment states that the dealer said to expect 1500 miles on a set of brake pads. This seems absurd. If used as a daily driver, some would need a brake job every 4 weeks. This sounds like nonsense. Unless I am misunderstanding something.
BMW gets 50 miles per set of tires when it runs its Ultimate Driving Experience (autocross) program. I expect the Porsche Driving Experience is also much harder on a car than what any of us will dish out on public roads. I don't think you will have to change pads and rotors more frequently than your oil!

Recomended oil change is at 20k. I doubt if I will do that in a year, so I will do the oil thing every 12 months rather than wait til 20k. Pads at 20k is not a problem.

If you drove your Cayman on the street like they drive Porchses in the Porsche Driving Experience and you have standard brakes then you would probably have to change the rotors [warped] and pads frequently. However, you probably would have already lost your driver's license and so it wouldn't matter if your brakes were shot. If you are going to track this car, however, better get the PCCBs.

I drive my 993 C2S on the track about 5 times a year. Other than increased pad wear I have had no problem with the rotors. I can't imagine the cayman will be worse than that. The cars at the Porsche driving experience are driven almaost daily at close to racing speeds. I'm not suprised they need frequent replacement.

As said, there's no comparison between PDE useage & street or street/DE driving. The oem front rotors on my 993 lasted 55k+ miles including about 3k on the track. The rear rotors still have life. I replace oem pads about every 7k/15k (F/R), but that's at the 50% wear limit required for our DEs & includes about 8 track days/year. For street driving I'd guess 3-4 times that life.
Note: I'm not very hard on brakes - after all, they just slow you down.

Last, $1,500 for a brake service? Does that include the K-Y Jelly? For those who haven't done it, replacing rotors &/or pads on later model Porsche's is fast & amazingly simple.
