I'm preparing to place an order for a 07 Cayman S with an MSRP of $64-$66K depending on the options I end up choosing. Is $4K off of MSRP a good deal? I've had hard time getting discount to this level -- but I've read reports of people getting much better deals (i.e. $2K over invoice) ....
Actually, I started @ Circle Imports since I have had affordable maintenance work done on my Boxsters there. I started working with a sales person there, but they said they couldn't do better than ~$1500 off of the MSRP. I ended up dropping by the Beverly Hills dealer because I wanted to take a look at Cobalt Blue in person and ended up chatting with a sales person there who I am discussing the $4000 off price which is much more reasonable.
Frankly, I'm surprised that I'm having difficulties finding someone who wants to sell a vehicle at a steeper discount. There is still a fairly significant profit margin and I don't think that the sales cycle for a Porsche-loyal customer is that involved/risky.
I mentioned this previously on an older thread. If you are a Costco member, The Auto Gallery in Woodland Hills is a member of the Costco Auto Buying program. Thru Costco, I got $6000 off MSRP on my 2006 CS without even asking. You need to go to Costco's website, leave your personal information and information about the car you want, and they will send it to the appropriate dealer who will contact you.
I called the dealer via the Costco/contact and couldn't get them to agree to more than $4500 off MSRP.
$4500 off MSRP for an '07 at this time is pretty darn good. Keep in mind that I got $6000 off in August, right before the '07's hit the dealerships, so the dealer was really trying to unload their '06 CS cars that they had remaning on the lot.

That's good to hear --- after hearing people talk about getting their Caymans at a few $K over invoice, I want to make sure that I get as good of a deal as possible
I got about 7K off my 06 in early October just for asking in the LA area. I'm not saying this is a great deal, just what I got by asking once with a bit of a take it or leave it position. I can imagine 07's might be less flexible.
Based on depreciation models from Porsche Leasing, they expect the Cayman S to be worth with 15K miles/yr:
1 yr old 80% of MSRP
2 yr old 59%
3 yr old 52%
4 yr old 44%
5 yr old 37%
So you can see that with an 06 Cayman S, the car is going to rapidly depreciate if it stays on the dealer lot, thus an incentive for the delears to clear these models out at a big discount of MSRP (but certainly not to a depreciated price). 07s are still so new that if you are getting $4k off MSRP I would consider that a great deal.
