Forgot to take my Porsche key out of my windshirt and ended up washing and drying the frickin' thing. Needless to say, it no longer works. Anybody know how much a replacement key will cost? I'm almost afraid to ask.
If they don't have to laser cut another metal part, that will save you some money, but the remote part will be about $200 or so last I heard. You'll also have to pay the labor charge to program the remote for your car... bummer.
Look in the manual as to how to replace the battery for it.......I believe you pop the top portion off. Anyway......open it up, clean it all out, and let it dry out thoroughly......you may want to remove the battery also. I can't tell you how many small electronics I have sent swimming that worked fine after drying out completely......my cell phone included. Don't buy a new one until you give it a shot......

I agree, I used to work as a field service engineer for an electronics company, and the first thing we did with parts that came in for repair was to wash them and dry in a warm air oven for 24-48 hours.
I think you need to make sure the unit is 100% dry, which a hair dryer may not do (or you cook it and break it..!). Try putting in a warm spot for a few days and try again.
I bought a third key. The other thread were estimates ...
The head cost about $150 ... key $100. Programming was free. However, they screwed up my programming in that it works fine ... named Key 3, but it doesn't do the custom things like lock the door at 6 MPH so next time at the dealer, I got to have it fixed
When you bring it in, you must give them ALL the keys you have.
Since the remote is separate from the key, just go to parts and buy the head and ask them if they can swap the heads (since the electronics are shot). The key is really two separate parts. That will be cheaper. Begs the dealer to program free ... If he wants future business, it should be gratis.
Thanks for the good advice. I dissassebled and dried with a hairdryer. Still deader than Kelsey's nuts.
I don't have the manual in front of me......but is there some sort of reset that needs to be done in order for it to work again?? I know on my Audi when I replace a battery I must reset the key fob by unlocking the drivers door with the actual key portion......then the RF fob works again. I don't know if this is the case with a Porsche key though.
Oddly enough, when the dealer sold me the car they "misplaced" key #1, so they ordered me a new one and shipped it to me (i have not assembled or programmed that key still). Then a few weeks later in the mail... what do i find? Key#1, i guess the dealer found it. thanks porsche, i always wanted 3 keys for the car i don't let anyone but me drive
