I purchased my first Porsche (Cayman) a couple of weeks ago (its been my childhood dream) and i'm very excited.
I'm obviously a noob on this forum and wanted to see how many ppl had a Cayman versus a Cayman S and what the general consensus of the group was regarding the purchase and the performance of the non-S version.
(i'm still in the break-in period, but only 278 miles left!!!)
I would say the majority of the people here now have the CS since it was out first but I'm sure that as the regular cayman sells, we will see a greater population of cayman non S owners.
Congrats on the purchase and welcome. There is a great deal of good info to be had here.
Enjoy.

Can928, welcome to the Forum! I've been a member here since August right after I ordered my new CS and in two weeks I will also be a proud Porsche owner, first time for me as well! The wealth of knowledge and the useful information this 3,000 plus member Forum offers is priceless! Enjoy your car!
Congratulations on your new car. If the Cayman had been available when I bought my car, I might have considered it. It isn't as quick as the CS, but it has the same basic Porsche-ness which is what sets the Cayman apart from its competitors. As you might guess, I have a Cayman S.

I ordered a base Cayman back in August but in early October was able to get such a good deal on an '06 S off the lot that I just had to do it. I agree that either car is great in its own right. This is my first Porsche too and that's been an interesting experience as well.

Did the drive from San Fransisco to San Luis Obisco via
Monterey and Big Sur and back to SF via Salinas Valley (read all the Steinbecks novels) a few years ago. Should be a blast in the Cayman. Enjoy!
Congrats on the new Cayman. Both are excellent cars in their own right, the obvious difference being the lack of power in the base. With that said, it still is quick whilst maintaining the ride, handling, feedback, and balance that personifies the Porsche brand.
Can928....Lots of past discussion here re break-in. Do a search. Many owners don't believe it to be necessary! ( I broke mine in "by the book") General agreement about not driving it hard 'til warmed up. Also, it seems, the owners manual for many countries does not even mention breaking in. Anyway, if you have 1,700+ miles, you're good to go! Welcome, Ed
I got the S as I knew that adding horsepower would be expensive. It is my first Porsche and have enjoyed driving every mile. Take it to an autocross next year and have fun.

Why interesting??? thats an "interesting" choice of words...
Much like my first BMW, I noticed there is a certain aura around the Porsche. First there's the car itself. Obviously Porsche has been an extremely successful company that has never strayed too far from their original mission of building sports cars. The 928 could be seen as a GT, and of course the Cayenne is no sports car, but it was a viable step in keeping the company independent. The driving experience of the Cayman is very pure and it's a feeling some people will pay huge sums for and some will never understand. Then that brings up the status/image of Porsche to the rest of the driving world. Some kids grow up lusting for all things Porsche, but there is also an element that sees you the Pcar driver as an aloof stuck-up snob. Even my friends and co-workers see it differently than the other cars I've owned. For every person who has complemented me on the car, I've had another that expects me to justify it to them. I bought the car for me and no one else, but I've never had a car that polarized the people around me like this one does.

I was debating to whether go with base or S cayman a while back. From the few times I test drive both, these are the main differences I find:
- The engine sound and exhaust note... Definitely nicer with the S, more powerful, full bass sounding. The base tend to be more "grawly" sounding.
- Power of the engine of course, the one thing I do notice is with the S, you probably don't have to down shift as much in lower speed as in the base model. The lower torque is quite a bit better obviously. But the Base is very quick in its own right.
- Base model has a softer suspension and when you corner hard and fast, you will notice it. Its just as capable, just the S would feel tighter and a bit less roll.. at least that is from my experience.
Other than these, the 2 model does have the same feel, very similar balance, and overall that same great Cayman drive feel.
I have a cobalt blue base Cayman since right around the time they hit lots and have been loving every second of it. It too was my first Porsche, what fun!
Great car, the S is great too, but not for my needs. My base is more or less my daily driver and when I get the time I go to the track, but I don't get the time too often...so, more of a fun way to handle the daily commute and weekend road trips.
Congrats man!! I also ordered a Cayman (Non S) and still waiting anxiously!! Owning a Porsche was also my childhood dream (actually it was for a 911 Carrera, but hell Cayman is a better Porsche for my usage than a 911). So how's the feeling of your childhood dream becoming a reality?? Share some pics if you can!! Good luck Caymaning!!
