When I was shopping for color, I looked at the two side by side. They were slightly different, and I couldn't see that one was "better". What I did know was that I had better ways to spend a few thou. Call me Arctic Silver.
Marty
I've seen them side by side on the dealer lot. Frankly I couldn't tell which is which until someone pointed them out to me. I certainly will not spend the money for the GT silver. However I'm interested to know if anyone has the color and the reason for it.
My dealer said that the GT Silver is more brushed-metallic looking. I took that to mean it was more like a "Pearlescent" silver than Arctic Silver. I saw no good reason to get GT Silver based on the cost difference.
I've seen the color formulas for each......GT Silver has a touch more grey in it.....that's it. It matches very nicely with the Cocoa interior. Other than that it's pretty much just another variation of silver.
I agree second... I was thinking silver and cocoa is an awesome combo. At first I thought with terracotta, which I think still looks good, but cocoa is a great unique color.. for almost $2700 though.....
Anyone got some pictures of this combo they could share....
Are we sure that the GT Silver isn't a "special" paint process, involving, I dunno, more expensive paint, or more coats of paint or clear-coat?
I suspect there is a reason (other than limited appeal) that Arctic Silver is $690 and GT Silver is $3070. The factory only shoots the Slate Grey, Dark Olive, Dark Teal, Lapis Blue, and GT Silver paint every two months or so. (I base this statement on the UK order guide's warning that ordering one of these paints means a built-in delay of two months.)
I've searched Porsche literature for a mention of WHY they call it "special" paint, but can't find any.
Nothing special about it.......Lapis and Dark Teal were "non-special" last year.....now they are "special". Cobalt was special last year, this year not so lucky......demoted to your average metallic.
Some colors stay on the special list for a long time.......GT Silver and Slate have been on for a while. GT Silver is still relatively new, but Slate has been around for a long time.....and once was a "standard" metallic color.
Dark Olive is a neat color that for some reason was $495 on a Cayenne......the same year it was a $3k option on anything else Porsche made. I'm sure you use a lot more paint on a Cayenne than a 911/Boxster/Cayman.
It's all a big Porsche shell game IMO.......there are some people that see a color and just gotta have it......no matter what the cost. Porsche just hopes more people will like the $3k options any given year.......it's pure profit for them.
If someone wants to pay $3k for paint......no problem here, just remember you probably won't get anything more (or very little) out of it on trade/resale......once it leaves the dealer it's just all pretty much "paint"......condition and mileage will prevail after that.
