Test drive

Went to a dealer and got a test drive in a base cayman yesterday. No question, I am sold. I still have a couple questions as the salesman wasn't able answer them (suprise, suprise).

The one I drove had the sport steering wheel which I don't like the look of. I think the standard wheel looks much better, but does it feel the same? Is the diameter the same?

Also, I haven't experienced PASM yet and I am wonderng what to expect. Is it a harsher ride, softer, or the same? I really don't care if it is more comfortable and will probably only opt for that option if it is harsher/offers higher cornering speeds. That or if I can get some coilovers that will work with PASM. Needless to say I am all performance oriented.

I couldn't turn the PSM off on the drive so whats it like with it off? Will the rear end step out fairly easily with just base cayman power? It certainly seemed like it would yesterday.

So, I am shooting for a base cayman, 5 speed, sport seats, sport chrono, and undecided on PASM. Thanks guys.

Welcome. What color scheme are you going for? Re PASM do a search and read some of the many, many different views on the subject. The best way to be sure of what is right for you is to test drive cars back to back over the same roads that do and do not have the options you are considering. If your dealer doesn't have enough cars it would be wise to find one that does if you can. It may be inconvient but will pay off in the long term.

The steering wheels are also a subject of much conversation. The sport wheel is generally more popular because of it's look, but that is a matter of personal opinion. It has a smaller diameter and I believe a thicker rim. There is also the thicker leather sport wheel, which I think costs around $800. I believe all the wheels are similar across all the cars, so you can also look at 911's and Boxsters for examples.

As for PASM, I liked it and ordered in my CS. It makes the ride harder or softer than the base suspension and automatically varies in between the two. I believe in the base Cayman it only comes with a 6 speed.

Good luck, options are the hardest decisions and can quickly drive up the price. Have fun!

Yes, the sport wheel is about 1/4 inch smaller in diameter, and the rim is slightly thicker. I have PASM on my CS and do believe it offers better cornering when set on sport. Others may differ. We are very pleased with the sport seats. But you should drive with both types of seat and decide for yourself. That is what we did, and were sold on the sport seats. Enjoy the process!

MY ride is rough enough with 19's no need for PASM, however I do love the sport wheel.

If you are performance oriented and no too picky on options you may want to opt for a left-over '06 CS. You'll get better brakes, more HP, 6 spd trans, and std 18" wheels. Drop these same performance oriented options on an '07 non-S and you will be around the same $s.

6 speed

If you want to extract the max performance from the base, you should consider the six speed. Althoug Porsche claim identical 0-100km times and almost identical top speed, the 0-200km for the six speed is 23.2 versus 23.7. After I recently test drove the car I came to the conclusion that it was the one option that would really improve the car. The closer ratios with the addional gear will make it easier to keep the revs above 5000 and that is were the 2.7 engine is at its best. Unfortunatey it is only available with PASM. If you find the ride to soft (which I don't) then you will obviously benefit from PASM in sport mode. The point remains that you are better of with the addional power of the S, than a heavily optioned 2.7 with stuff like PASM and SC which does not really make the car go significantly faster (if at all) Good luck it is a tough one!

RussK, I don't understand your remark. You state your ride is rough enough without the PASM. By reading that it would seem you have a false impression of what PASM does for the car. It is softer than the regular suspension and will make the ride less harsh with 19s as well. On the other hand, when you "activate" the sport suspension mode (not incl. sport chrono) it will become extremely stiff. Stiffer than the standard suspension. So I wanted to point that out in case anyone not familiar with the suspension options is reading this and is misled.
