Cayman Update: 800 miles, New Transmission

So...... This is the rest of the story.

I got home with my Cayman and knew that the shifter was sitting awkwardly. I also had a hard time shifting from 4th to 3rd. I had to wait for the speed to fall and shift into 2nd. Somtimes I want to find 1st and got 3rd instead. Something is WRONG.

Took the car to my local dealers last Wednesday and they found a cable of suspect length. They ordered a replacement and installed on Friday. Problems did not go away. So they dug deeper into the transmission.

On Monday they told me the transmission is the culprit, and had ordered a new one, due today (Wednesday). They are sure that would do the trick.

They called at 2:20 pm and said car is good to go. I went test drove it and it was night and day. They said the old tranny was missing a 'seat' and a spring that sets the position of the shift lever with the gear sets. They were very surprised the the car got through PDI in that condition.

All gear engagements are now smooth and creamy, and I can up-shift/down-shift all day long. It is a dream to drive, as intended.

So the invoice shows 1- transmission, part # 987-300-010-x. 6- locking nuts, part # 999-084-052-02, and transmission fluid. Obviousely parts and labor are free. So a brand new transmission at 800 miles.

I am now a very happy camper. Life is good.

maybe we should make a chart and start keeping track of clutch/flywheel/trans issues and mileage?

Someone commented that the Boxster also has a high failure rate with tranny/clutch. Is that a fact?

Could this problem only be related to the 5spd tranny, not the 6spd, or wouldn't that matter in this case?
