Factory Software

  1. How often does Porsche update the factory software for the Cayman?
  2. Is there a list anywhere of the latest update version?
  3. Can you tell what version is installed on your Cayman without going to a dealer?
  4. Is upgrading your factory software covered by warranty?

1) When they feel it's necessary - there is no set schedule.

2) This, I'm not sure of - As far as I know, there have not been any overall ECU software updates issued for the Cayman or Cayman S. I believe there's been a TSB issued for the PCM module though.
davew posted a current list of TSBs in this thread recently: 06 CS Engine Replacement - "factory recall" ??

3) Not without a PIWIS reader that the dealer has - they're about $15k, from what I understand.

4) Yes - when updates are issued, service bulletins are issued to dealers and the updates are done automatically when you take your car in for service - after your warranty expires, I believe there's a labor charge.

actually with regard to #3 new laws (EPA) and standards (SAE) have been mandated that require manufactures to allow Independent Repair Facilites to have reasonable access to the factory DME software data and to be able to both determine if it is up to date and update it if necessary. To this end there are a number of aftermarket flash tools (called SAE J2534 Pass Thru Devices) that you can buy for about $1500 that allow you to upload and download the factory program and there is a web portal that porshe set up that allows you to connect to any of their 04+ MY vehicles and check if the software is up to date. The check is free, any new downloads from porsche are $100. There have been no cayman DME updates released to date.
