front license plate

My CS has recently arrived at the dealer in New Hampshire - I should be picking it up this weekend.

Everything was going smoothly, until...... I am bringing it out-of-state and had requested (several times) that the front licence plate holder not be installed and therefore no need to drill two holes in the front bumper (where its going there is no front license plate requirement). However, when the dealer sent photos of my CS (will post later today), the front license plate was installed! When I asked the dealer why after requesting it not be installed I received the following email reply:

"They are now installing the plate bracket on the cars when they arrive at the Port.

The factory puts the pilot holes in the front bumper when the car is manufactured.

Sorry, but nothing could be done to prevent it."

Is this what others have experienced? Does this make sense? Do they pre-drill to make sure the plate is properly placed?

I live in CA, where front license plate is required by law. But I was able to get my car w/o holes in my front bumper.

Although, I do see to distinct indentations in my front bumper to properly allign the front license plate if and when it needs to be installed

I do not believe this to be fact. Cars arriving in Louisiana dealerships from Brunswick are NOT pre-drilled. It makes little sense to put holes in bumpers where no front license is required.

I call BS. There are tiny indentions as noted, but they are not drilled until the dealer gets their hands on it. They made a mistake and are now lying to you to CYA.

Same problem here. Did not want holes in the bumper, though we require front plate. Car arrived with holes regardless. Ended up discarding dealer plate holder (to small for standard plates), studied photos of Porsche press cars with Stuttgart plates, drilled holes and positioned plates with 2 small stainless round headed tappers.

Mine was installed inside the trunk with the instruction to remove the holder and plate OR when the car came in for service that it would be installed.

The law in California requires that the plate and mounting stuff to be available when the car is purchased. It doesn't go so far as to make it be installed.

Front License Plate Bracket
11713.17. (a) Following the retail sale or lease of a motor vehicle for which the department issues two license plates, a dealer may not deliver the motor vehicle unless either of the following occurs:

(1) The motor vehicle is equipped with a bracket or other means of securing a front license plate.

(2) The dealer obtains a signed written acknowledgment from the person taking delivery of the motor vehicle acknowledging both of the following:

(A) The person expressly refused installation of a bracket or other means of securing the front license plate.

(B) The person understands that California law requires a license plate to be displayed from and securely fastened to the front of the motor vehicle and that the hardware necessary to securely fasten the front plate is available from the dealer.

(b) A manufacturer or distributor may not sell or distribute in this state a new motor vehicle for which the department issues two license plates, unless that motor vehicle is equipped or provided with a bracket or other means of securing the license plates.
Added Sec. 1, Ch. 365, Stats. 2004. Effective January 1, 2005.

Absolute 10000000% BS.
My dealer told me that they only drill holes after OKing it with the customer. All cars come with only two miniscule dimples in the front bumper for where to drill. They are not more than 1-2MM deep and barely noticable. No pilot holes as claimed. Factory does not drill them.
I was told that there were customers in my area who refused cars after dealer mistakenly drilled the holes. That is why they ask and ask again before they do it.

I have those two tiny dimples on my CS and on black they are not visible until you are foot or so away from the car.

One of our members even had the dealer replace the front bumper after they drilled it without asking. I'd consider that route.

My state (NY) requires two plates, and I am grateful that the bumper at least has the two dimples to guide the installer of the bracket. On my Boxster, the plate is mounted a bit higher than I would like. On my SL, which didn't have any built-in guides, the plate is mounted ever so slightly off-center. 987f

Thanks folks for the feedback.

I am really not sure how to proceed. Do I call the dealer and demand a more reasonable/accurate explanation and hope that they come clean? Do I demand that the front bumper be replaced? Seems extreme but it is bothering me that someone took a power tool to my brand new CS against my wishes!

Take a look at the Bumper Plugs web site. That fix might appeal to you. I think they are a Cayman Club sponsor.
