Front cargo area storage bin - product suggestion

While reading a few threads on this forum, I have come across several great ideas from car covers, to remote key modules, what types of tools to carry along in my CS and even how to prep for track day.

I have ordered the car cover, purchased the sure fire flashlight, made note of some tools I would not have thought to bring along with me and while surfing the net for the car cover, I came across this link which shows a nifty cargo liner for the front storage area of the Cayman.

http://shop22.porsche.com/usa/produc...6AADE6CFE17E44

Since that area is carpet, and I know I will be carrying many things from track stuff to car care stuff, I thought hard about purchasing it. But something about spending $200 for a piece fo plastic just made me not do it.

Then I had an idea....storage bins are very popular these days and just why would those not work with the Cayman? Furthermore, they are so cheap...say 20 bucks or so....why not buy several...one for track day, one for car care..one for long road trips...with the tool set...etc... Whatever your needs. All you have to do is swtich them out as you wish.

I was on my way to a Office Depot or Staples...as soon as time allowed.

It just so happens that my girlfriend and I went to the pet store today (PetSmart) for a few things for our dogs. While there, I saw a Blitz food storage bin that had an irregular shape similar to the storage area in the CS. This food storage bin not only seemed to be the correct height, and depth (front to back) and was slightly more narrow than the side to side dimension...but was close enough for me.....

So for $32.00 I purchased it. Took it to my Cayman....and BINGO...this thing was the ticket (imo)! I could not wait to get on here and recommend it. I am going to go buy a few more. Okay...so three of these equal $100 bucks for plastic, but I think they are more practical. Here is the product link:

http://www.bergansmartstorage.com/describe.htm

I am referring to the 50lb version. (Bergan recently purchased Blitz animal division)

Here is one better. These things have hinged lids....versus independent pop off lids found on most storage bins at Office Depot. Actually it has two hinged lids...the main one..and a small inset lid so you reach inside without lifting the entire lid (to get food out).

Okay...so its smoked color plastic...not black as I hoped...but I think the fit more than out weighs the color match. Besides...who is going to see it?

Just to give you an idea....I have the following in it:

1. A 5 gallon wash bucket.
2. Windex spray bottle
3. California squeege blade
4. Clay bar, and its applicator and spray.
5. Roll of paper towels
6. Tire dressing (large size)
7. Wax
8. Tire wax
9. 12 microfibre towels
10. Wheel cleaner spray bottle.
11. and other things I have forgotten.

And with the narrow dimension of the bin, this means you can STILL get more in the tub itself. I decided to take the roll of paper towels out and put them beside the storage bin to keep it from sliding around.

The height of the storage bin is PERFECT. The depth is PERFECT .....snug as a bug in a rug!

Now you might ask why I carry car cleaning products around in the Cayman. Well my garage is under construction, so I do not presently have a place to put them. But you guys (and gals) can use these bins for almost ANYTHING.

It may be a bit cheesy for some of you, but for me....it serves a great purpose.

Enjoy!
(sorry for the long post.....I have never been accused of being short winded)

The bin sounds great. I like the hinged top. Can you take and post some pics of it in the car so we can see what it looks like. Thanks

Thanks for the pics it looks great. I'm definitely going to get one. Not to carry cleaning products, but to carry anything which could make a mess. I have a friend with an '05 Boxster S who put a bottle of wine in the trunk, which some how exploded on the way home from the store. What a mess, and a pain to clean.

Wal-Mart has containers that fit perfectly. They conform to the shape of the objects and/or the trunk and are about $2 for a bag of 10. Come in green or orange. :-)

Well the good news is that the 20 lb container does fit snuggly right beside the 50 lb. The bad news is that it is $26 bucks. My final recommendation is that you only buy the 50lb. For several reasons. First, its too expensive for the 20lb in my opinion. Second, the fit is SO tight, I fear it might scratch the interior plastic at the navigation storage area. Third, I guess I just like having a little freedom of room on one side. It feels too cramped.

GT......are you saying wal-mart has a container that fits perfectly, the ENTIRE cargo area in the front of the Cayman...for $2 bucks. If so, can you send me to a link or something? OR are you saying you can fill the cargo area with multiple sized containers, each sized to your cargo needs, and for two dollars for ten containers?

I am preferring to use one container so I can buy multiple......one for each type of trip I am taking.

If I wanted to put multiple containers into the cargo area, I would just buy the liner from Tequipment and toss in all the junk.
