I just noticed on the "Excellence" website http://www.excellence-mag.com/ that their lead story is a comparison of the Cayman 2.7 with the iconic 911 2.7 RS. Being in the UK, I won't see this magazine for months (if at all) so would someone please put me out of my misery and tell me what they conclude.
Now THAT is going to be an interesting read. I am a subscriber and am looking forward to that one.
I loved reading Chris Harris' article on his 2.7 and never would have seen that here in the states. One good trick deserves another. I won't leave you hanging.
I'll post right now, they choose the Cayman 2.7 over the 2.7 911 RS, yep that's a shocker considering that the 2.7 only received a lukewarm welcome. Pick up the magazine!
I only wish I could, but it is very hard to come by here, and always a month or two late.
The editor Pete Stout is a member here you might email/pm him about that and see if he has any recommendations. I think his handle is horizontally opposed or something like that.

I'm in the US next week. PM me your address and if I find a copy I'll stick it in the post for you.

OK, I my June issue came yesterday (or maybe the day before, I was out of town) and I read the article last night.
Very good read.
First of all, I think it was amazing and almost a little insulting to see the Cayman compared to the iconic 911 Carrera RS. I mean there a reason the RS is worth more than $200K today. It represented what they refered to as the 'high water mark' of 911 performance. It was a raw and undiluted sports car.
Ok, hold on, let me get my flame suit on. OK, here we go. Just being realistic, the Cayman is one step up from Porsche's entry level sports car, the 987. Right? Boxster, Cayman, Boxster S, Cayman S. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying anything negative. What I'm trying to say was that this top of the line perfomance 911 that has earned sports car icon status shouldn't be compared to this car, should it?
Well, read on and they start talking about weight difference and horsepower difference. The Cayman is a whole 1,000 pounds heavier.... That's a 48% increase in weight, but the Cayman only has 17% more horsepower. That means each horsepower of the Cayman is pulling 12.9 lbs while each horpsepower of the RS is pulling only 10.1 lbs. Once again, this isn't going to be a fair fight.
But then you read on to find out that the Cayman is faster 0-60, 1/4 mile, top speed, and it's handling makes the RS feel 35 years old. How is this even possible. The little Cayman delivers a victory that seemed impossible.
I saw the article and expected the usual, "The newer xxxxxx has more power, better handling and more features, but there is just something about a 911" conclusion that has been handed to 928s, 944s and Boxsters in almost every comparison. Imagine my surprise that the Cayman prevailed.
They will receive some strongly-worded letters from unhappy readers!!

You have to read the article......
I think horsepower was calculated differently in the 70s. In fact I think it's been changed a couple of times since then. Can anyone confirm this?
It is not so much a a flame of the 911 RS as it is a testament to Porsche's progress. It is a weak connection at best that they both have 2.7 engines which makes them comprable??? Would you rather have a C6 Vette or a '56? The C6 is a much better performer (may even weigh more, I don't know), but the '56 is a classic car. If you are driving around in a 911 RS, you already know the car is not the at the top of the performance heap. It was knocked off long ago. Is anyone suprised that some 30 years later Porsche is building a better car (even one slotted lower in the line-up) than they did back in the 70s? Today's BMW 3 series is much better than a 30 year old 5 series no matter how classic or cherry. With the possible exception of the Shelby 427 Cobra there are very few cars that haven't been eclipsed in 30 years by their descendants or the decendants of their lesser siblings. There are a lot of readers of Excellence who are caught in a time warp -- these guys may freak on the article. Should they have compared it to the current 997 C2? Oh wait, not a 2.7. Again, a ridiculous basis for a comparison, but they have to fill the pages.
