Cayman vs. the 356

It has occurred to me, looking at the extreme upward slope of the Cayman roof just aft of the windshield, and the rounded lower corners of the front hood (bonnet), that the Cayman bears more than a slight resemblance to the 356. Having a more close-coupled greenhouse than the 911, it seems more like a direct descendant of the 356-series than does the current Carrera coupe, which looks to my eyes like a two-door sedan. The general silhouette of the Cayman is very reminiscent of the 356, and one can even imagine one of the early silver aerodynamic coupes built for road racing by the Porsche factory. It's nice to be able to see the "ancient" Porsche DNA that pretty much disappeared after the 993-series went out of production. 987f

Check out the roof line of the more recent GT1 race car and you will also see some similarities in Cayman design (without the roof airscoop of course). I replaced my Boxster S with Cayman for a variety of reasons, but primarily because it is one of the world's best looking cars....and it drives like it looks.

Another opinion

I kind of thought the front end of the Cayman looked a bit like the 550 series. To bad that Porsche didn't put a big hairy oval exhaust pipe out the rear end like they used, except in polished stainless steel. Who else remembers the 550's & RSK's? Or,Vineland [NJ] race track.

Yep, the Cayman front end does look kinda 550ish. I think the whole body looks similar to the RS61 coupes. For me the 550's and especially the 718 RSK is one of the best all time looking Porsche's. Or for that matter, one of the all time best looking race cars. And they were the ultimate giant killer's.

I guess this knowledge makes me an "Old Dude" too.

Cheers,

GuyC
