base 997 vs Cayman S

So I went to the dealership yesterday and drove the base 997. I own the Cayman S, and my buddy has a 997S so I'm pretty familiar with both models. I love my Cayman S, but everytime I look at the 997 I still think about a "what if" situation. So I decided to decide for good. Here's what I thought of the base 997:
Positives: more torque, better shifter
Negatives: definately more bulky at lower speeds around town (I know it's only 100lbs more, but it's probably cause of the weight in the rear).
Neutral: different handling than the Cayman. The Cayman's is better, but I did like the feel of the weight at the rear at higher speeds. Just different imo; and I understand why people enjoy the challenge of driving the 911 at speed.

Overall if I had the choice over, I would definately go for the Cayman S over the base 997. The driving experience is that much better. If you need the rear seats, or you just want a 997 because it's a 911, then the 911 is the choice. Other than that (and maybe resale), the Cayman feels better, looks better, ect. ect.

What about color? Any "what if" situations there? Mine's black, but I sure like silver......and white.

You are kidding right? If I had a "what if" problem I wouldn't be driving Speed Yellow. Nope, Speed Yellow all the way for me! If someone GAVE me a Cayman in another color I'd take it and add it to my stable but not a single day has gone by where I have wondered about one in another color. Nope, SY is it baby yeah!

The 911 rear "seats" are for light cargo, double amputees, and mother in-laws!

Sorry, Ken about the non-PC attempt at humor.

I sat in a 997 Turbo at the PDE day and noticed that the gear shift is very precise (almost switch like). I've not driven a 997, but is the gearshift of a 997 better than that of the Cayman? I believe they are both cable operated.

Seriously, I have heard that the origin of the 911 rear seat was the ability to transport an injured person. Some German regulation/standard.

The Cayman and the 997 use the same exact gear shift mechanism, same part #, etc. If there is a difference it is merely how one is broken in, or not, or if one has a short shifter option and the other doesn't. Otherwise they should be identical.

As I recall the 4 seats had to do with car insurance - could this be right - does not make much sense but who knows. As pointed out by others those seats are more like extra storage, and I feel sorry for anybody that has to get in and out of them, won't even mention having to ride in them ;-)

I ws actively looking for 05/06 997/997s when I first test drove the CS. I test drove a base 997 on the same road and did not like it as much. I have owned several high performance cars but my track time is limited to a few factory and BMW club events. With that in mind, I felt like the cs was much better suited to my skill level. The 997 felt tail happy and I was not comfortable at cs speeds in several sharp curves.maybe ok for experts but not for me.The cs corners like a rocket on rails and I feel that is a faster car from point a to point b than a 997 in standard trim. Look at the slalom test numbers. When and if they give the cs a few more horses- the 997 line will have a major problem selling cars with the exception of the turbo and GT3s. They already lost me.

The distance from the gear lever (stick) to gearbox is further in a Cayman than in a 911 as the gearboxes are in different postions. Therefore I doubt if the linkages are identical and so there is a difference.

yes...there is a difference in shifting with the cayman and the 997. I had an OEM short shifter in the cayman and in my 997 and the shifts are much smoother in the 997....almost feels like it wants to shift itself. Whether they are identical or different mechanically I cannot speak to, but they do feel different. I have driven the 997C2 and 997C2S and both of them shifted similarly. Note...I adore both the cayman and 997C2S....also, different does not always mean better, it means different.

the back seats are good for something else...kids. My seven year old fits very comfortably in the back and loves the ride.

Ken, dont get the 997 base, stick with the Cayman S. The base 997 just doesnt have enough zip, and i agreee, it does feel heavy. When you move up to the 3.8, thats when the fun starts...at least for me. Good luck.
