Just bought the Autocar thie week. BMW is bringing out the 1 series coupe with the 135i selling less than £30,000. (Compare with £45000 for our Cayman S)
It got the same 3 litre direct injection turbo engine(306bhp with 295ib of torque-same as 997 Carrera S) from the 335i but weigh 100kg less than the 335i coupe. Because it is a turbo engine, with a simple remap from a good tuner 350bhp+ can be easily achieve!! Although the rear look incredibly ugly but who cares if it is a Porsche-destroyer.
Maybe the 135i can FPH????
andylee,
Come on you know a peaky turbo engine doesn't make the M1 a Cayman killer, it isn't all about HP or what numbers a tuner can turn up. What does a 335i weigh a gazillion kg's? Center of gravity? Handling? "Feel" of the car? Oh and yes you already mentioned looks... The one thing I do like about the car is that it appears they tried to make the front bumper treatment to be reminiscient of the old 2002's which is kinda cool...
The 135i is a taller car than the Cayman and will likely weigh more in standard trim. This video gives you some idea of how the car will travel through corners.
Dimensions [metric] of the 135i. Length may be equal to the Cayman
...the 335i but weigh 100kg less than the 335i coupe.
That will still make it 3350 lbs! It will never compete directly with a Cayman if the buyer knows what he is looking for in a car. Nevertheless, as a nice coupe with a rear seat and a trunk, it will be a great car... just not a sports car. In fact, I will probably buy a BMW One Series for my wife in 2 years (let them work out the bugs first). But I imagine that the 128i would be a better car for pure driving pleasure. It will get rid of all that extra front end weight from the heavier iron block engine and turbos, return the front/rear weight ratio back to 50/50 and weight down to 3130 lbs. For me that will be the ticket. But then again, I have a base Cayman on order because I think the current hp wars are ridiculous. Even on the track, it's more fun to drive a lower hp car to its limit.

Interesting video of a chipped 335i, 997 RS & 996tt drifting, accelerating and generally shredding the tires!.
Note he has the aftermarket quaife LSD installed, procede ecu tuning and catback exhaust, most like pushing 370 whp in this video with procede v2 (not yet realeased to the public).
LSD - Limited Slip Differential
A limited slip differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity.
The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely– the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use however, such as driving off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.

Thanks for the video!
I might save some money(£20000) buying this instead of the new M3???(The waiting list is too long anyway!)
The engine does not sounds like a turbo at all(Almost like a V8)----Im impressed! The car need lowering though--it is lurching a bit in some corner! Looks like one of those cars that need a test drive before trying to jump the waiting list!
The extra cash can help me to trade in my current CS for the direct inj Cayman S
Many thanks Mpollard for the video---Its not that bad looking on the move!
Ken, I'm guessing you haven't driven a 335i, b/c its engine is anything but peaky...it feels a lot like a V8, and is a great engine IMO. I agree that it's not going to be the full package to compete w/ the Cayman, though, but would be a great alternative if you needed the additional practicality of a 4 seat coupe.

As to the price of the M1 (if they use that name again) or the 135i as it will appear first, for similar money I would prefer an Audi TT quattro. If you are going to buy a compromise car, get the best: 4 seats, AWD, Audi fit and finish, and a distinct look. BMW needs to come up with a car that breaks free from the family resemblance. The Z8 and the M1 are classics for this very reason. Even the 2002 enjoys extra looks for its unique design.
The new M3 will have to compete directly with the Cayman S on price and performance. In a sea of BMW homogeny it's not as attractive. The M3 used to pose a nice balance of price/perforance/quality making it a smart pick for many. At the higher price point, the C2 comes into play offering seating for young 'uns. It will also have to compete in house with the 335i. M3 fans may adopt it, if not, it may kill the M3 name.
