According to Porsche The Cayman and 911 share more parts in common than the Cayman and Boxster, but I think that was before the 3.4L engine upgrade in the Boxster. As someone pointed out they are built on the same platform (987 platform) but are two very different interpretations based off that common platform. In a nutshell if you want a convertible go Boxster if you want a coupe go Cayman.
The Boxster S has the benefit of the mid-engine versus the 911 but the fact it is a convertible removes some of the track performance because the body isn't as 'stiff' as a Cayman S. On a track the Cayman S would be the better performer but if you aren't a track junkie and want an open top I think for public driving you wouldn't feel the difference too much in handling.
So the Boxster S "outhandles" the 911 Carerra too?
You have to define "outhandle" or be more specific. Will it achieve a higher slalom speed? Yes probably so, will it have faster lap times? Depends on the track and as someone else pointed out above the Boxster will have more chasis flex and wouldn't make as good of a pure track car as either a Cayman or 911 coupe. Again, it really comes down to what you are looking for, if you can tell us that, with some detail, then perhaps we can help you more.
With the Boxster you are going to get a lot more body roll... if you are interested in aftermarket suspension tuning you may be able to get the handling to approach the Cayman.

I had great fun out at Thunderhill with a guy in a Boxster S with R compound tires. I was in my Cayman 2.7 with PS2's. We both were about equal and both were faster than the Carrera on the track with us. What does this all mean?
Nothing, but it was great fun.
I am an intermediate driver and find it pretty easy to keep up with Carreras despite their big HP advantage.
In addition to the stiffer chassis, the CS has ~10% stiffer springs (and shock valving?) than the BS.
Do you have a source for this information? Actually that goes for all of the other responses. I am curious about the differences besides those that are obvious.
I would think probably 9 out of 10 never track their cayman or boxers anyway. I never bought my cayman S to track it, nor do I desire to even. Not skilled enough to do it and really don't care to. It handles better than I can make it do, so maybe I am not getting my monies worth out of such a great sports car, but again I would think most are like me. We think we drive um hard but we really don't even come close..
Power wise both are same but
1)the Cayman being a coupe is more rigid which means a stiffer car like Cayman feels more precise .
2) The engine note is nicer due to the big rear glass hatch reverbarating the sound
3) The fixed roof gives the cayman sharper handling and better steering feel since the terrific chassis is fixed to a rigid structure
4) Looks are subjective but some don't like the soft top look of boxster and Cayman coupes look nice but don't offer the top down experience
