6-Spd vs 5-Spd and PASM?

Hi,

This is my first post, so please go easy!

I'm still in the learning stages of my future Cayman purchase.

On the base model to upgrade to the 6 speed requires PASM, which just so happens to be the only two major upgrades I really care for. The question is will the PASM and the 6spd upgrades warrant the $2500ish cost on a base model?

Reason I'm looking into the base model is you never know what you truly want until you have it parked in the garage.. So I could either find a used CS with ? Miles? color? price? problems? or just go for new. As far as I can see its $9k just for the 50 more HP and rims?? If money were not a factor I wouldn't have such a decision to make. I'm sure this is just the first of many quandaries.

Your thoughts are welcome.
Phillip

For your $9k you also get a stereo upgrade.

I'm biased: I ordered a Cayman with the 6-speed/PASM. If anything, the lower powered car needs the extra gear more than the CS. I'm going to track the car some, so both made absolute sense to me. There are some other upgrades you should really consider, like the stereo and climate control. See the FAQ section. Very helpful.

Phillip,

Welcome to the club. I think if you spend some time searching you will find a lot of very compelling debates on the meritts of PASM. It's one of the more heated discussions. I've driven Caymans with and without PASM back to back and spent extensive time driving both (see this post: http://www.caymanclub.net/cayman-cha...tml#post191253). I personally find the PASM to be a very worth while options for any Cayman that will serve as a daily driver. I also feel that the 6 speed transmission will make the 2.7 liter Cayman more enjoyable, though it will result in more shifting (a benefit or drawback, depending on your personal preference).

The extra $$ for the 50 HP is a better value than $2500 for 6th gear and PASM IMO. The 50 HP also comes with grunts, snarls and growls that fill the cabin an driver with joy. Add to that 6 gears and PASM and there you have it ...

If Porsche would have introduced the Cayman first, I would have held off, waiting to see the CS. Since they made the CS first, I couldn't recommend the Cayman over it. But, then again, I also can't recommend the base Carrera over the CS either.

...On the base model to upgrade to the 6 speed requires PASM...

PASM is NOT required for 6 spd. It is just a separate option to help make the car ride more smoothly over rougher roads. It is available with any Porsche transmission config.

Two days ago I again drove a 2.7 stock Cayman. And I was again surprised at what a wonderful car it really is, with plenty of HP for all normally driving, passing,.. long distant driving, as well as city only driving. ... If I made my car decisions using just my good intelligence, I would easily choose the 2.7 Cayman. Unfortunately in this current life, I rarely choose just straight intelligence, and I prefer enough HP's to be a serious danger to myself.

At least on 2007 orders, you couldn't order/spec the 6spd transmission without getting PASM. You could get PASM alone. So from one perspective, Bodhii you're right.

Bodhii,

If you examine the 2008 Order Guide, I think you will discover that you can not get the 6 speed without PASM. They are packaged together. You can get PASM without the 6 speed, option code 475 for $1,990; But if you want the 6 speed you need to get both the 6 speed and PASM under option code P04 for $2,680 (so the 6 speed costs you about $690 more than just PASM).

My bad. Thnx for the info. But I must admit my confusion. While I search for a used CS, I have driven many many 6spd CS's without PASM. And I must admit I have found PASM to be a very rare option indeed. Maybe less than 1 or 2 out of 10 CS with 6 spd. have PASM. How is this possible?
