I drove a 911 prior to my purchase of my CS. 911's are iconic when it comes to Porsche and I wanted a piece of that. One thing that I couldn't shake when I was pursuing my 911 purchase was that I thought the styling was a bit dated and I was looking for something fresh. I have learned from past experiences that if something bothers me from the beginning, it is only going to get worse with time.
Then I saw the Cayman. WOW!!! What a difference in styling. I loved the sexy hips and sleek curves of the Cayman and I thought this was the car I wanted, and I haven't even driven it yet. Now comes the test drive. Holy S***!!!!!! It felt faster than the 911 and wow how it handled. I knew I had a winner here. I left the dealership and started my research on the Cayman, which of course let me here. The rest is history and of course, sitting in my garage...
Contrasted with the Carrera: architectural correctness, and aesthetics that are today and trim and lithe, not yesterday and a little dowdy (no offense to Carrera volk). Also, for me, the Cayman is of all things more practical. The only cargo I'll be putting in the car for the forseeable future is bicycles and groceries and luggage and production gear and hiking/camping gear and such, i.e. not little people in the back. You're not getting a bicycle inside a Carrera without breaking something (the bike or the car and probably both), but lots of folks get them under the Cayman hatch with a minimum of fuss. Doesn't hurt that the Cayman has a lower price, though I could have gotten a nice late 996 (pretty cars!) for less than my used (err, "pre-owned"...) CS cost.
On top of that, my last Porsche was a 928, so I probably developed a complex about the Carrera a long time ago. I wasn't and ain't fated to get one. Well maybe a Carrera GT
Really? You cram a bicycle in the back of your Cayman? I'd love to see a picture of that!
Would Dr. Ferdinand Porsche really stick the engine in the rear if he had access to today's technology? I think not and I say that after owning three 9lls and a 912 way back. They were great cars but the Cayman handles a lot better.
I actually went in to buy a 911 but saw the Cayman for the first time ( My First Porsche) and felt it just had a more exciting body design.Fresh and simple..The fun is customizing the car though .Everything is new and exciting ,No offense but the 911 has been around a long time and just does not get me as excited. the $$ was not an Issue and I just coluld not fit in the dam lotus. Seattle magazine just voted the cayman the #1 mid life Crisis killer for men for sport cars ..
The differentiator for me is the mid-engine design. I started with a Toyota MR2 Spyder, moved to a Boxster S, and finally to a Cayman for additional stiffness. A mid-engine car is perfectly balanced, which is probably why F1 are mid-engine.
I finally came to a point in life that I could afford a sports car (had my accountants blessing). Tire kicked the Corvett, its still a Chevy. Then saw a Cayman for the first time and test drove it and that was it, its a beautiful in a bad-*** kind of way car. Now I'm a very calculative person, took 14 months to find the right deal (color, options price $$$)
Bought a beautiful basalt black base Cayman with all the right options. A Porsche is always a Porsche.
