Want to start a discussion to why members on this forum chose the Cayman. After reviewing some of the cars belonging to the members, it became clear that close to half the members could afford a 911 but chose the Cayman (I base this on the options list that drove the price of the Cayman into and beyond 911 territory).
In my case price certainly played a factor but more in respect to Cayman vs. Cayman S. I didn't even consider the 911 since I like the way the Cayman looks better. It feels like the Cayman is what the 911 should have morphed into. It's a relatively small sports car (similar size to air-cooled 911) that performs with agility and sharpness rather than brute power. My brown car reminds me of the 911 - from the 70s and 80s. Brown was actually a signature Porsche color in Europe.
These are strictly my opinions and I very much admire the 911 but prefer the Cayman. After setteling for the base Cayman, I'm extremely pleased with the car. It is the perfect daily driver, and is as discreet as you can expect a Porsche to be. I love the simplicity of the machine. It is the perfect testimony to the "less is more" idea.
Anyway, these are only a few of my thoughts, that I felt compelled to contribute, and maybe start a discussion about what are some of the key reasons why others chose the Cayman and Cayman S.
Well for me it is the price, the CS is an amazing value. If I was going to spend double what I spent you can bet I can find a better car that I would like more.
It was actually fairly simple. I chose the better car.

For me, the Cayman was the product that stirred my soul. Between the very sexy shape, the fact that it was a new model and a mid engine coupe sucked me right in. At the time, I was saving up for a used 993, which also spoke to me. Then came the news of the Cayman.
With options, my Cayman S stickered for more than I would have paid for a Carrera, so I didn't buy a Cayman because of price.
I had previously owned a 1986 944 Turbo that I absolutely loved. I had that car for 10 years. During that time, I experienced my fair share of 911 owner snobishness and learned that a car doesn't have to have cooling fins on the engine to be fun to drive.
I guess the Cayman represents something fresh and new to me. I like that.

Always liked Porsche's my friends had, drove great. I just couldn't get with the styling of the line. I saw a Cayman in the local parking lot and was just stunned by it's beauty. So I rented one for the weekend and that sealed it.
For me, 911 was more myth after I tested them. CS far exceeded the performance of the 911's I was testing. The only positive I had in the 911 category was for interior space. At 6'4", I am at the limit of the CS interior whereas I had some more whiggle room in the 911.
Contrasted with the Carrera: architectural correctness, and aesthetics that are today and trim and lithe, not yesterday and a little dowdy (no offense to Carrera volk). Also, for me, the Cayman is of all things more practical. The only cargo I'll be putting in the car for the forseeable future is bicycles and groceries and luggage and production gear and hiking/camping gear and such, i.e. not little people in the back. You're not getting a bicycle inside a Carrera without breaking something (the bike or the car and probably both), but lots of folks get them under the Cayman hatch with a minimum of fuss. Doesn't hurt that the Cayman has a lower price, though I could have gotten a nice late 996 (pretty cars!) for less than my used (err, "pre-owned"...) CS cost.
On top of that, my last Porsche was a 928, so I probably developed a complex about the Carrera a long time ago. I wasn't and ain't fated to get one. Well maybe a Carrera GT
I had always love the old bathtub speedster Porsches. I followed the press when the Boxter was a concept car. It was very speedster like, initially. When it came out I seriously considered buying one, but did not. I have always preferred a coupe. When the Cayman came out I said, this is it. I loved the very sexy shape, mid engine, etc.
This is my first Porsche, but not my last.

Several folks have mentioned they did not like the way the 911 drove when they compared it to the Cayman. Can you be specific as to what it was you disliked?

911 - Didn't like: rear end felt harsher (probably due to higher rear spring rates due to weight bias), in moderate speed sweepers, 'slow' bumps in the pavement made the back end wallow. I have driven two 996's and one 997, all C2.
Liked: lighter steering feel which was the best I have ever felt, especially coming out of corners, and the way it just plain hooks up coming out of slow corners especially. I also have to say that the 'cache' of a 911 helps, but in the end, those are other peoples' opinions and I'm not driving the car to impress them.
Otherwise the Cayman just felt more involved, and I was driving a Boxster which I felt very at home in already, so the CS was just like a stiffer, quicker (dynamically) version.
My opinions only, but those were the primary driving factors for my decision. It doesn't hurt that the CS is about $20K less than a C2S to begin with.
I went in with the intention of buying a C4S. I have owned a few BMW's, MB's and a 83 Targa for nice weather. I drove the C4 and felt that the car drove more like a luxury sports car than the sport car ride I expected.
After diving the CS there was no doubt that this was the ride I wanted.
I love the simplicity of the car. No more techno screens, buttons or warnings. Porsche has gone old school with the CS. The cars shows its love for the road when the ignition is turned on. The sound from the pipes is better than satellite radio. It devours the road eagerly anticipating the next curve. Engine, tires, balance to the road playing together in a symphony only a mid engine Porsche can.
From the rear there is no better looking auto on the road!! The shape is so well proportioned.
I drive my car daily in the Windy City. Snow wheels ready to go on when the weather changes.
