I'm fence-sitting between the Cayman S, and an Evo SE. I only want a car that'll be a blast at track days. The faster I can go the better, so I'm considering how much $$ basic track mods to both are, and the Cayman definitely is a lot more. Test driving the Cayman before the Evo, I came away loving the way the Evo drove in comparison. Seemed much easier to flogg it, and also felt a lot lighter and more responsive.
Why haven't I purchased one?
The image attached to the car.
Childish and trivial, but the majority of them around here are driven by "skippy's", and the motor being the configuration that it is, it sounds like a "Skipped-Out" civic. This has not gone un-noticed by my wife, and she won't drive it if I get it. I've been on Evo.net, and the majority of the peeps on there are normal, intelligent individuals, who feel about the car as I do. If these guys were the type my wife saw driving the car around here, I'd be set.
Anyway, the Porsche would definitely do the job, but it's twice as much, doesn't respond as well to basic mods, and like-mods are two to three times as much. (suspension, exhaust, ECU re-flash, etc..). The resale on the Evo also looks to be much better, and the new Evo 10 is getting ripped because of it's toned-down nature, possbily making the Evo 9's resale value actually grow.
This weekend I'm plulling the trigger on something, or I'm not gonna do anything.
Here's my game-plan: Porsche is gonna come down 16% or more on their leftover '07's, or it's the Evo. I just think I might regret buying the Evo if it happens, solely based on the percieved image attached to the car. Childish and trivial, as I wrote.
I need input, Pa-Leeeeeeeeeeeease
How good of a driver are you? Can you really wring 10/10ths out of either car?

Two reasons... It's a PITA to get in and out of, really bad visability on the street. Both are enough for the wife to kill it. It was the first one I considered.
If its only for track duty, the EVO is going to offer more bang for the buck, hands down. However, if you are driving it daily or on weekends, the cayman is still a sexy sports car, not a factory-modded 15K Lancer. I like EVOs and STi's and I am impressed with what they can do, however, I wouldn't be happy with one in most situations. The performance is incredible, but the times when I can utilize it are far and few.
It really comes down to how much this car is going to be on the track, and what else it will be used for. The EVO is also a 4 door sedan, so it is quite a bit more practical if you need to carry anything with the car.

It is possible to get 16-17% off the msrp on the '07 if the dealership has more than 1-2 still in stock.. You will be really lucky if it's in basic configuration and in the color you like, and not a $90K spec-ed one custom-painted to match somebodies girlfriend's shoes, and unclaimed because the shoes went out of style last summer... Anyway, if only thing that's stopping you from Evo is perception, I wouldn't give a flying... if I were you, get it and be happy, it's an awesome car... and whole lot of it for the $$$ too.

Well said.
The Evo looks, feels and, of course, is cheaper, but that doesn't matter much on the track. Plus, Evo maintenance, repairs, parts, etc. should be less than the Cayman.
"[My wife] won't drive it if I get it."
Is that a positive or a negative?
I bought and modded a WRX at the age of 47, and while it didn't look as "boy racer" as the current Evos/STis, I wouldn't let that stop me if I wanted one today. I bought a Cayman because I always wanted a Porsche, and the time was right.
If you're primarily looking for a track toy (as well as something that will shred everything else on gravel, snow, etc), then I think the Evo will give you more bang for the buck.
BTW, at my last track week-end there was an Evo in my group that easily out ran my un-modded, Tip CS on the straights (don't know what kind of mods he might have had).
Thanx guys!
Looking like the Evo. Found an '07 CS with a $63K MSRP, they'd let go for
$53K, but the reason why they would was the gawd-awful blue interior. Thought about it, and that's the part I'll be seeing the most of, and I don't dig it in the slightest. Got one more P dealer to try, and that'll be that.
I only want a car that'll be a blast at track days.
Then why do image, wife's opinion, ease of ingress/egress, etc., matter? If track day fun is the primary criteria, those factors shouldn't get much weighting.
I'd also look at a used S2000 - they're durable and much cheaper to track than either the Evo or Cayman.

You're asking me why my wife's opinion matters?
I choose to pick my battles. Going road racing every month and sometimes more, is a battle I'll do. I did it before I met her, and it's integral part of my job.
The whole idea with me getting a "Fun" car, is to have uh, fun. Being what it is, she'll want to drive it on the street. She works very hard, and takes care of our three kids. It's not too much to get something she'll like as well. I think I might be able to justify the Evo when she sees how much cheaper it is, and if I can get her to drive it, once.
FWIW, the S2000 isn't a consideration with me, as I saw a guy flip a Cobra once, and the thing was into the ground to the tops of the doors. Don't do convertibles. Don't care that you could cage 'em, the perception of having a roof over my head is the perception of better protection. On top of that, for that price the Evo offers a turbo, which gives you the option of adding a lot more power, easier and more reliably.
