Did anyone consider this comparison when shopping? Im close to picking up a CS, but was quite impressed after an initial test drive of the BMW.. not too mention you can get a fullyloaded one for much less than a CS.
I realize these are 2 different beasts, but Im curious of your pinions..
I think they are both great cars, so I bought one of each. I drive the Cayman S the most and I think it is much more fun, but for times when you have more than one passenger the 335i is outstanding.
My wife now has a 2007 328 coupe with the sports package and automatic, that we bought about 3 months after getting the CS, which replaced our 2001 330ci that was essentially a DinanS1.
Putting the HP question aside....
The new 328 is a totally different driving experience from the Dinan3, and a world apart from the CaymanS. It is certainly a nice car, and my wife loves it (a lot because it's an automatic vs the 5 speed in the Dinan), but I have not "bonded" with it at all. It is a much heavier car to begin with and very solid too, and as a "sports coupe" a more "refined" (softer) ride than the CaymanS (with 18s, and standard suspension). It is also very quiet.......
The new 3 interior is a personal preference, but I think it is nicer than the E46 3 series (without the Nav bubble in the middle of the dash), but I really like the simplicity of the CS interior. Plenty of trunk space in the 3 too.
While I tracked the Dinan quite a bit and AutoXed it a handful of times, I have just AutoXed the CS, and there is no comparison to the old (or I can imagine the new) 3 series - AutoXing the 3 was just no fun, but is a riot in the CS (1st DE coming in January!!). Again, forget the HP for a minute, the handling of the CS is simply amazing compared to a sports coupe.............
If having a rear seat that can sit an adult is important, or you simply need the more all around versitility of a larger car, the 335 may be a good compromise, but that's what a sports coupe is - it's not a sedan but yet not a sports car. I just can't put a 3 series (any 3 series, including an M) into the same slot as a Cayman or CaymanS based on our 328 and even my E46 Dinan3............ Not that the new 3 isn't a nice or even great car, it's just not a purebred sports car like the Cayman.
Now, let's talk about replacing my 325 wagon with a 535!!!!! Now we're talking apples to apples (well, little apple to a big apple!)
Regards!

2006 CaymanS - Black/Black
2003 BMW 325it
2007 BMW 328i coupe
I currently drive a BoxsterS and was really into the CaymanS to the point where I was going to soon trade in my Boxster and finance a CS.
However I fell in love with the Audi S5 which is a competitor of the 335 and also the new M3. Price wise, fully loaded (I am talking about FULLY loaded) it falls between a semi-loaded CS and a fully loaded 335i (Audi is 58k). I just test drove it today and I was amazed by the build quality of the interior and exterior as well as the power of the V8 and the fact you actually have 4 seats.
By no means do I try to advertise or hijack the thread, however since you are considering the 335i maybe you should also check the S5 as well

When I was shopping in Sept 06, there were discounts on the Cayman already but the 335 was the hot new car. I test drove it at two different bmw dealerships. My second test drive was awesome as the dealer who knew me (and had sold a car to me) took us out on some nice back roads. Also, I had just stepped out of an e46m3. At the time, I owned a nice 330i zhp (e46).
I found the 335 very capable but extremely soft, quiet and void of feedback. I think it's a great every day car, but the e46 m3 was far more entertaining on the same circuit. Maybe with chip, exhaust and firmer suspension, but I'm not much of a modder... Of course the cayman is even more entertaining than the e46m3. (The most entertaining bmw that I've driven is actually an e36m3).
Actually I'm just buying a 330xi - today- for the winter - I really like the new bimmers but they do sth very different than the cayman. The 335 is just not fun to drive hard - a few minutes into my test drive I got bored and started to go slow.
I test drove the 335i (stock). The ride felt completely different, very soft compared to CS and very sedan feel. But I heard that with Procede, you can tune the car up to 380bhp. That's a lot of power. The M3 should ride harder with 400+bhp and M suspension set-up. The good thing about 335 and M3 is the options to choose the coupe, the hard-top convertible and the four-door - great with a bunch of families and friends to ride along. Having said that I prefer the M5 as a family car.
I picked up our new 08 328xi a week ago and while the car feels heavy, the steering and brakes are great and the acceleration is just OK. You can't really feel any torque of the motor when you step on it. The fit and finish is very good but I still don't like the over all design of the exterior. In my opinion it looks fat and bloated and doesn't do anything for me. I don't know how BMW can continue with the Bangle design, ruined the lean muscular look of the earlier 3 series.
Its gonna be a long winter, especially walking past the CS twice a day in the garage.
isnt the 335 coup more in price range of cayman than cayman S........ i looked at both and felt that the cayman was more fun to drive........and you go from driving a BMW (way too many on the road) to a porsche.....
