Once again, that's from the referenced 2005 R&T article and was unseated by the CS and is exactly what I was correcting.
Both are fine cars. I'd be happy to have either one. It really comes down to, IMO, for most people whether you want the ragtop or not.
No need for sibling quibbling. It's all good
Sorry for resurrecting this thread, Chows. Reading Jeff Daniel's book last night reminded me that the majority of Boxster S road tests would have been done in 2005/2006 with the 280HP engine that the car originally came equipped with. All of the Cayman tests would have of course been based on the 295HP engine.
A 15HP advantage in the original Cayman spec would explain much of the difference noted in road tests. Now that both cars have the same engine, the performance differential would be even more marginal than it already was.
It's all good - they're both fantastic cars!

Yawn...... I just can't see debating this. The Boxster and Cayman are sooooo similar now. Both are great cars with slightly different strengths and weaknesses that are pretty much subjective. To each their own.
I hate to contribute to debates like this because they are not that different from the unwelcome criticisms that were slung by the elitist 911 crowd when the Cayman was first introduced.
As an owner of both Cayman S DE1 #266 and Boxter (Spyder RS60) # 773, I can probably tell you that they are very similar and with the boxter is more fun drive, and in my case handles and brakes better than the Cayman DE1. Only explaination for this is that my Cayman S DE1 came with Potenz 19" RE050A, while the boxter Spyder RS60 came with 19" Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. The RS60 is more stable in corners, turn in is better and braking is better as well. I can only guess it is the difference in the tires. I have used Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 on my previous RX8, and BMW and it is indeed a wonderful tire. The difference between the 2 cars is very noticable, to the point I am thinking to get new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 on my Cayman and althoug the RE050A has 80% tread left. Any one interested in buy the tires? I will give you a good deal.
Again going back again to our topic that both cars are very similar if all things are equal. I would also make sure you buy the car with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 if all possible. Mark
I love the intimacy and quiet (oh I can hear the engine for sure, but with windows rolled up, I love the sense that the world is blocked out).
That said, something about the Cayman's rear end ... in my mind, it is one of the the best looking cars EVER. I am serious about that. Aesthetically, it's like they made this car just for me.
What is so cool is I have loved the 911 since I bought a 914, that was the car I wanted. And they captured the 911 in the front. Then moving on to the back, somehow they came up with the perfect rear end... the whole thing just flows together like no other car I have seen.
Indeed, tires make a huge difference in handling. This is an important factor when reading road tests in magazines for me; I always note what tire they used.
The PS2's are wonderful tires!
I have owned a 2000 Boxster S, 2006 Cayman S and now a 2006 Boxster S and frankly, you have to be race driver, going at the very limits of handling on race compound tires to really notice a difference in the handling of these cars.
As an interesting point of comparison, I have driven both 2006 cars at the Thunderhill race track on the same tires and am within a second in my lap times; I'm a hair faster in the Boxster which incidentally has the 3.2L engine!
I'm running 2:09's with the bypass and 2:11's without. Not lightening fast, but respectable

I know it won't settle the issue, but the fastest time of all the stock classes at the recent Charlotte Parade autocross was done in a '02 Boxster S (okay, so it was done by SCCA national autocross champion Danny Shields). Someone in a GT3 took the second fastest time of the stock classes, and the 3rd and 4th fastest times were taken in Cayman Ss.
