When I first got the Cayman, lots of people asked me that question. I told them that I didn't know, as I don't pay attention. I drive the car because I like it and it doesn't matter if some stranger looks because they like it. But......having said that, I was curious when I bought the LE Boxster. So I started to notice. It seems that I get so many more looks when I am driving the Cayman than when I am driving the blatantly orange Boxster. I would think that color, if not the car, would generate a lot more looks?!?! Anyone else have any thoughts on that? Do you notice people looking...or do you even care??
I wouldn't say it happens all the time, but it does happen. There are a fair number of expensive sports cars in Seattle (especially Porsches), so many people don't pay that much attention when they see another one driving by. Or maybe, it's that the basic Boxster design's been around a while, so the novelty has worn off. Who knows...I think the Cayman draws more looks than the Boxster because it's a newer design and harder for a casual observer to immediately identify as a Porsche. It really does look more expensive and exotic than it is.
Having said that, when people stare, they really stare. The best so far were the two teenaged girls who stopped in their tracks in mid-conversation and watched me drive by. I could see one of them mouth "Oh wow!" in my rear view mirror. Or, my next door neighbors' 7 year old daughter who ran up and squealed "Awesome!" as I drove up the other day. Or my other neighbor's shy 3 year old son, who insisted that his dad tell me he wants to go for a ride in my car. I'm just waiting for a warm, sunny day to take him out with the top down.
Overall, it's a mixed bag. Personally, I don't care for (and could live without) all the attention. Like you, I bought the car just for me. I especially don't like the looks I get at times (clear jealousy or resentment), or the way some people treat me differently because of what I drive. There are two women in particular I remember as being generally cold/indifferent whenever I'd seen them in the past. No big deal..., but it's revolting how much warmer they suddenly were and how they started treating me very differently after seeing me in my Porsche. Yuck...

No doubt it's kids that have the priceless reactions. My favorite was the swivel-headed kid with the slack-jawed, nay prurient, smile on his face. I live in the little university town of Moscow and in these environs a Cayman is up there with UFOs.

Yuh huh, I hear that.

I'm staring at your car. It's beautiful!

Thank you . I'm sure I'd be doing the same with your cars and bikes too. I debated between silver and midnight blue (one of my favorite Porsche colors) for a while. Midnight blue looks absolutely gorgeous against sand interior.
And the SV1000S is one of my favorite sport bikes of all time (that and the current generation R1).

The first day I had my car I drove into the city and at one point all kinds of people were looking at me and pointing. For the first 1 second it felt cool then I realized that I was in Georgetown and my car should not attract that much attention. When I turned around I saw a new Lambo in the other lane right behind me. I haven't seen a lambo in Dc before or since, boy was I upset!
I've had a lot of young kids say stuff and several dates visibly uncomfortable in the car but that's about it.

That's funny!
I live in a very small city (or large town). You might see a Porsche every now and then. The other day I pulled up to a stop light . . . feeling pretty cool . . . and wondering what might pull up beside me. Maybe get in a little stoplight drag race. I looked over to my left and there was a Lamborghini Countach. I haven't seen a Lamborghini Countach in the whole STATE, much less my hometown. I decided not to challenge him.
Come to find out a used exotic car dealer has set up shop in town. I need to drop by and see what he has. But my days of being "exclusive" are over.

gf - good chance it might have been a guy who lives up here in Boone. He has just a regular ho-hum house but hidden away he has like 4 or 5 Lambo Countachs. I seldom see one on the road but every once in a while and boy does it look out of place.

Actually, a Cayman S would give the Countach a hell of a run, at least for a short stretch. If you look at the acceleration times on a Countach, they are very similar to the CS and the CS might actually have a slight edge on some of the earlier Countach's. What I think is so neat is that the CS has performance figures (0-60, quarter mile, and top speed) very similar to the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Muira. When I was in my late teens/early 20's those two cars were new and the best of the super cars.
I too am a poor, unfortunate one that has the non-S. Come on, it could be a Yugo! Although, having the S loaner this week has been SO much fun! I know I would get into too much trouble with it though. It is just too much fun to feel the g-force. Plus, getting to work is pretty quick at triple digit speed! Just one problem, I can't seem to stop smiling and people are starting to wonder what is wrong with me?!?! Back to "slumming" it in the base Boxster and Cayman tomorrow. Life is rough. I wake up every morning and wonder what I ever did to deserve the life I have.
