Just cant decide between the Boxster and CS..PLEASE HELP
So here goes, I love the Cayman S and had one shortly (long story) but am also that guy who would enjoy driving his convertible is 50 degree weather. I live in Northern VA (DC Metro) and we have been of recent-global warming-been having unseasonably mild temps and see days in the mid 50s-60s during Jan-March (coldest in my mind). So i love converti's but like the look of the CS and name more. The hardtop really does make it look beutiful
What do you guys think? I have seen a hardtop which makes it look identical to a CS..Very hard decision.
The weather in your area is appropiate for a convertible. This is what Iwould ask myself:
1: How often do I drive my current car with the windows open?
2: How often do I use the sunroof, assuming you have had them in your cars?
Things to consider:
1: Convertibles require more maintenance.
2: They are prone to all sort of rattles and noises.
Both are great cars! The convertible only suffers a little bit by conparison in a race track. I have seen boxters driven in an amazing way at the track. Even at the track, the driver is way more important than the differences in rigidity the Cayman has over the Boxster.
In my situation I picked the Cayman S: I liked the looks better, I would rarely go topless because of the heat. I wanted the car to take to the track, and it is safer
there.
If I lived in the DC area the choice would be much harder.

As stated, only you can truly decide what you like. You can make an objective pro/con list, but there is always a visceral subjective factor that outweighs all others. Here's my list:
Boxster:
Pro: Wind in the hair open air excitement and sunshine. Great tanning machine in warm and moderate weather. Great visibility. For the true extrovert (More envious drooling stares). $4400.00 cheaper, which buys a few extra Porsche options. More ambient sound.
Cons: Subject to more squeaks and rattles. Less stiff? Greater maintenance. Feels more exposed and subjectively less secure. Risk of malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. Ruins hairdo (according to wife). More ambient sound. Top need to be up anyway when too cold or too hot, depending on where one lives.

Had a Boxster (987) for two years and then flipped over to the CS this past March. For me, the loss of fresh air was outweighed by the looks, exclusivity, rigidity and no feeling of claustrophobia. So, no regrets for me. That being said, there is nothing like moving along on a beautiful fall/summer/spring day in a vert.
As for the Cayman's looks, you don't look at it while you're driving so go for the Boxster! Or like Ken suggests, one of each would be the best!
Dave - are your posts funded now? Better watch out or Ken will chase you down for sponsorship!
I am so happy to hear someone suggest that....someone finally understands me. I do not agree with the following at all, but many times I have heard people say that the Boxster is "beneath" the Cayman. So, if you care about what others think, then go with the Cayman. I love the looks of my Cayman. I do spend more time in it than looking at it though. From that vantage point, I would absolutely recommend the Boxster. The moment the temperature hits 50, the top is down. In fact, in the last month since I have had the Boxster, I have only driven the Cayman twice. Nothing sounds better than listening to the engine with the top down. The car feels very tight and I have no rattles or noises that I don't want. I wish someone could have talked me into one or the other as it is pretty expensive to go with the option of both. In the end, no matter what anyone said I still couldn't make up my mind. So good luck with your decision. Hopefully it helps to know that you can't go wrong with either one!

Thanks, I really appreciate everyones feedback.
Caymans4s- I have read your posts in particular, since you have both and really valued your opinion. Have you seen the hardtop that a co. has out which makes the BS look identical to the CS...I will look for it.
Anyone seen or have pics of any nice BS with the hardtop?
Okay, so anyone see any good deals on BS 07s or above. I am looking for one with the Classic 19s in black, silver or white. I have always wanted a convertible, so this might be my chance......Gosh I love the S-linbe of the CAYMAN :-X Decisions, decisions!

This is like choosing between Ginger and Mary Ann (I'm not saying which is which!) You'll probably be thrilled with either. If you've had a convertible before and like the open-air aspect, then I'd lean that way. When I had a convertible, I almost never had the top down, so my personal choice would be (and was) the CS.
I know how you feel. I have narrowed my decision down to the CS or BS. I found a black 2007 $50K BS with tan interior and sports Crono/heated & power seats/Bose with only 4K miles on it. It looks like an OK deal... I probably will never run the car at the track ( road Atlanta ) so I doubt that I would ever be able to tell any real handling differences. I hate to admit it, but the Boxster does seem more like a "chick car" to me than the CS does. It probably should not bother me, but I would be lying if I said it did not bother me at all... ( I do not remember anyone calling my 500hp mustang a chick car...)
On the hand I love the way the CS looks. It is the best looking Porsche ever in my opinion. However, at 6'-4" I felt like the CS was a little more cramped than the Boxster because I can put the top down in the boxster. I do make long Highway trips and the CS would probably be better on the highway due to less wind noise...
I live in Atlanta so there is plenty of top down weather most of the year. It is a little too hot in the summer, but great at night. The vista roof in my 2007 Ford Edge stays open most of the time...
I will be buying a used car in any case and I have noticed that the Boxster drops in value faster than the Cayman. Since it is already less expensive new, I find that the BS is a far better value if you buy used....
As soon as I sell my Mustang, I'll have to make the same decision.I am leaning toward the Boxster, but it is too close to call... ( and no the wife will not let me have both... )
